An unusual George III novelty snuff box, in lacquered Papier-mâché on tortoiseshell, bordered with tooled unmarked silver, the cover enclosing a portrait miniature of a seated lady, partially on ivory, with thumb-pull mechanism moving the figure’s arm, holding a floral bouquet, to and from the figure’s face, 3cm high, 7.5cm diameter. A George III silver pocket snuff box. The hinged cover embossed with a scene of putti cavorting in a woodland within scrolling borders, the slightly bombe sides embossed with flowers and rocaille, the base engraved with script initials 'GJ(?), mark of William Lestourgeon, London 1746, 2.5cm high, 6.25cm wide, (1 x 2 1/2 x 1 7/8ths inches), 69g gross (a little under 2 1/4 ozs); together with a hand-written note giving details of the hallmarks Condition Report: Generally in good condition. The adjoining edges have possibly previously split and been rejoined/repaired within the interior. Hallmarks are rubbed. Possible loss of decorative details to the lid, possibly due to polishing. Rims are slightly uneven. No obvious dents or distortions to the silver. Wear including scratches and pots of discolouration consistent with age and usage. Opens smoothly.

The top surmounted by a miniature cannon, the wheels nesting in the raised foliate border to the rectangular top over a vacant cartouche. the ogee body decorated with scrolls and flowerheads, enclosing a gilded interior inscribed to reverse of cover '' presented August 29th 1856 to Sergt. Major William Livsey, by the Officers and Men of The West Essex Yeomanry Artillery for his meritorious services in bringing that Corps. to its present efficiency ''. The box is hallmarked for Birmingham 1853, makers mark Yapp and Woodward. the cannon is unmarked. Box measurements 3.5 x 8 x 5.5cm. Cannon 3 x 7.5 x 5cm The cannon has a pin missing to secure the right wheel, also absent is the pin to secure the end of the carriage to cover of the box.
