A Russian Silver and Niello Snuff-Box, Maker's Mark HM, Moscow, 185?, Assay Master Andrey Antonovich Kovalsky oblong, the hinged cover and base each engraved with bands of foliage scrolls and rocaille on a niello ground, the sides with latticework, the interior gilt85mm wide, gross weight 3oz 11dwt, 110grMarked inside base and cover. The marks with some minor wear but generally clear. There is some overall surface scratching and wear, consistent with age and use. The wear is noticeable as a softening to the engraving and the niello. The wear to the niello is most obvious to the base. There is a bruise to one of the short sides. This has caused a chip to the niello and a small split.
