A MEISSEN GROUP OF 'DIE POLNISCHE LIEBESWERBLUNG' OR 'DIE POLNISCHE VERLOBUNG' Late 19th Century, after the original probably modelled by J. J. Kandler, with a moustachioed figure wearing a turban, taking a pinch of snuff from a box held in her right hand, by a seated lady, at the rear stands an officer with a sword and axe, the mound base applied with leaves and flowers, cross swords in underglaze blue and incised numerals 882, height 14cm.

An interesting early 18th Century silver snuff box, of elongated octagonal form, the hinged lid inset with an oval James I silver gilt badge or naval reward, the border engraved with leaves and berries enclosing a gilt interior, the base later inset with a late 18th Century German silver gilt medal by Loos (1 piece of applied edge to base detached), 9.5cm wide, bearing the maker's stamp CGH. This rare James I badge or naval reward is thought to have been given as a present to a court favourite and represents the healthy state of the country after the reformation. The front depicts the bust of the King three quarters right wearing a wig, the George suspended on a riband legend, Jacobus DGMAG BRITA.FR.ETHI.REX, the verso depicting the ark on the sea with bright rays bursting from the sky. The inscription translating to 'may it stand safe amid the waves'. This design is in the manner of Nicholas Hilliard but since being inset into the box has lost its upper log.
