ATTRIBUTED TO NAPOLEON BONAPARTE: An early 19th Century black lacquered snuff box, the lid with chequerboard style line detail with gold coloured central cartouche, opening to reveal a silver plaque to the inner lid “THIS BOX BELONGED TO NAPOLEON AND WAS GIVEN BY MADAME BERTRAND TO LIEUT. HAYNE R.A. AT ST HELENA 18TH MAY 1821”, measures 5.5cm x 3cm x 2cm. Provenance: Lieut. Haynes is recorded to have been on Madame Bertrand’s Visiting List (Lowe Papers 20,128, p.517 / St. Helena Who’s Who). Madame Bertrand was Napoleon's attendant on St. Helena and died April 20th 1822. An Eastern niello white metal rectangular snuff box, with applied geometric decoration, waterside and ship designs to sides and moon and star crest above building design to cover, unmarked possibly Turkish, approx. 6.8cm wide x 1.7cm high. Along with a plain silver circular pill box, gilt interior, hallmarked by J Wippell & Co Ltd, London, 1949, approx. 4.8cm wide x 1.8cm high.
