An early 20th century silver and enamel snuff box, possibly of French origin, of oval form, the side with a band of dark green guilloché enamel, piano hinged cover similarly decorated within a border of trailing vines over a textured ground, gilt washed interior, underside with London import hallmarks for Sterling silver and sponsor's mark of Gourdel Vales & Company, 7 x 3cm, 1.8oztOverall in good condition with no obvious sign of repair. Some very minor surface scratches and nicks to the enamel but no losses. Hinge in good order. Some very minor distortion to the locating flange, but it does not affect the closing and opening of the cover, which is positive. Hallmarks clear and readable. Some wear to the gilding.

OF GRAND TOUR INTEREST: A GILT-METAL SNUFF BOX WITH PAINTED COPPER PLAQUE19th Century The oblong case chased with flowering scrolls, the cover inset with a painted copper plaque of the Parthenon, 9.5cm wideCondition report: The metal with tarnishing and wear commensurate with use and age. The metal of the hinged cover is of a slightly more redder coppery finish, suggesting that the gilt surface finish is more rubbed here than to the body below. Possibly some residue of a white-ish dried cleaning fluid in the recesses of the engraved detail. The card base is slightly loose - see additional images - together with the fabric lined interior which is also a little delicate and loose. The painting of the central medallion is in good condition.
