ABERDEEN - a Scottish provincial mounted cowrie shell snuff box, circa 1760, maker Coline Allan, marked CA only to inside of lid, the flat hinged cover with engraved clan Skene crest incorporating a arm holding a laurel leaf crown, inscribed VIRTUTIS REGIA MERCES, with reeded borders, plain thumb piece and mounted terminals Length 9.5cm The motto translates as A PALACE THE REWARD OF BRAVERY £1,500-2000
ABERDEEN (probably) - a Scottish provincial mounted cowrie shell snuff box, circa 1825, maker probably J Begg or Barron, marked JB to the inside of the lid, of small size, with floral and prick-dot engraved decoration to the flat hinged cover, initialled EMAM Length 6.5cm As there is no town mark it is impossible to make a definite attribution, nevertheless it is felt that this is likely to be the mark of either J Begg or J Barron of Aberdeen. Holloware by either of these makers is rare. £200-400

ABERDEEN - a Scottish provincial presentation snuff box, with marks for Aberdeen circa 1800, maker James Erskine, marked with three castles, E and hand and dagger, of rounded rectangular form, with waisted sides, agate cabochon set lid and bright engraved foliate and prick-dot borders, the similarly engraved base with oval cartouche inscribed From Rob't Hutchison Esqr. To A. Ross Width 7.2cm Ex The Murray collection, Lyon and Turnbull 20th August 2003 lot 232. Formerly purchased from Bieldside Antiques 1983. £600-800
BANFF - a rare Scottish provincial snuff box, with marks for Banff circa 1810, maker John Keith, marked M, IK and B, to base and IK to inside of lid, the outline resembling a cowrie shell, with flat hinged cover and prick-dot engraved borders around the central harebell engraved oval, initialled JR in script, with reeded and scalloped borders to sides Maximum length 9.5cm Of very unusual form, believed to be one of only very few fully marked Banff boxes. Other Banff snuff boxes are known (one a cowrie shell) but these are only marked with maker's marks. See also the two Banff vinaigrettes in this collection which are also struck with maker's marks only. £4,000-6000
GREENOCK (probably) - a Scottish provincial mounted cowrie shell snuff box, circa 1815, maker probably James Orr, marked JO only (in script) within an oval punch, with flat hinged cover with bright engraved border inscribed Wr SCOTT, GREENLAND, 1815. Length 8cm Ex Thomson, Roddick & Medcalf 29th October 2004, lot 328. Note - A similar mark was used by J Osborne of Dublin, however the shipping and whaling connections Greenock had at this time, coupled with provenance, suggests that this is by J Orr of Greenock.
PERTH - a Scottish provincial mounted large cowrie shell snuff box, circa 1800, maker William Ritchie, marked WR and double-headed eagle, the flat hinged cover finely bright engraved with chevron and prick-dot borders around the central foliate engraved oval, initialled MJ?
