WILLIAM BATE (FL C1799-C1845) AFTER JEAN PETITOT ANNE `NINON` DE L`ENCLOS (1620-1705) signed on the counter enamel Painted by W Bate Painter in Enamel to HRH Princess Elizabeth from Petitot`s in the King`s Collection of the Ninon de L`enclos, turned contraposto in a blue robe and pearl necklace and pearl filet, 4.8 x 4cm, gold frame The original miniature attributed to Petitot is in the Louvre (No.35715). The subject was a favourite of 18th and 19th century copyists and recorded examples include another in enamel by Henry Bone, signed and dated 1807 set in the lid of a gold snuff box (Wallace Collection, London). Further examples are in the Victoria & Albert Museum (No 940-1868) and the Musee Condé, Chantilly. Anne `Ninon` de l`Enclos (1620-1705) was one of the brightest ornaments of 17th century Parisian life. She embodied beauty, wit and influence at the highest levels of society. A free thinker, author and courtesan, she lived to be over 80 and amassed great wealth. In fine condition set in a plain narrow later gold frame
