A collection of 19th century and later snuff boxes to include a burr wood example with cherub and chariot flip top, 8.5cm wide, a mounted rosewood example, 7.5cm wide, a floral scroll pewter example, 7.5cm wide, a birch wood style example, 7.5cm wide, and two others including a horn example and a larger wooden example (6) CONDITION REPORT: Largest box (fruitwood) with crack to the one side. An early 19th Century Scottish sycamore snuff box, the hinged cover with penwork scene of a witch cursing a mounted gentleman with groom in a landscape, inscribed 'Ride Your Way Laird of Ellangowan' (from Sir Walter Scott's 'Guy Mannering'), the remainder of the body decorated with fruiting foliage, 7 cm wide. Note: this box was held by its owner, A.W. Coysh, author and collector, to be the work of William Leighton Leitch RA, drawing master to Queen Victoria for 22 years, who, as a young man, was employed for two years as a decorator at Mauchline, painting snuff boxes: other artists were, of course, similarly employed at Mauchline...
