A George IV 18ct Gold Snuff Box, Charles Rawlings, London 1824, rectangular with rounded corners, with engine turned engraving and a vacant reserve to the cover, 7cm wide . Clear marks to interior and part marked to cover. Engraved decoration is crisp, remannts of snuff to interior and possibly in hinge. Box closes tightly. Generally very good order. 73.4gr
A Silver Mounted Mother-of-Pearl Snuff Box, English or Dutch, probably early 18th century, unmarked, oval with hinged cover, the front applied with a silver mount depicting a Harlequin and monkeys, the sides with scrolling foliate engraving; and A Gilt-Metal Mounted Agate Snuff Box, 19th century, oval with hinged cover, a banded agate cover and base, the front with a shield shaped reserve, each 7.5cm wide (2). The mother of pearl example - Some wear to the definition of the mounts to the cover. Split to the mount around the cover to the left of the hinge. the mother of pearl cover and base appear intact. There is a fine gap between the base panel and the silver at the back of the box. Some small scratches and nicks to the silver mounts.
A French Blonde Tortoiseshell Snuff Box, circa 1790, circular with pull-off cover and two colour gold foliate mount, the cover inset with a gilt metal medal commemorating the return of Louis XVI to Paris in 1789 by Benjamin Duvivier (1730-1819), 7.5cm diameter The medal within this box was produced in 1789 after the return of Louis XVI to Paris. It depicts the King being led by a female figure of Paris and a further woman and child with the Tuileries Palace beyond and is inscribed Jy Ferai Desormais Ma Demeure Habituelle, Arrive Du Roi a Paris Le 6 Oct 1789. These events taking place after the Women's March on Versailles the previous day, which saw thousands of angry market women, and other revolutionaries, head to Versailles over the lack of and high price of available food. The King eventually giving in to the crowd's demands and releasing food from the Royal stores and returning with his family to Paris.
A Gold and Enamel Snuff Box, marked FJ crowned, a stylised flower, and a crowned R resembling the Paris date letter, probably Hanau circa 1800, also struck with French eagle post 1838 warranty mark for gold, oval with hinged cover, the sides, base and cover decorated with blue enamel over an engine turned ground, the cover set with an oval enamelled panel depicting classical figures in a garden setting, all within white opalescent and green enamel bead and ropework borders, large loss of enamel to base, 7cm wide . Marks struck to inside of cover, all three with some wear. Duty marks struck to rim. Large amount of loss to the enamel on base. Front panel has also had re-enamelling. Hairline crack to the inset panel in cover, and one or two scratches. Some discolouration and losses to the smalles enamel borders on the sides of the box, mostly below the hinge ant to the front. Cover closing well, hinge appears free from damage. 81.2gr.
Horatio Lord Nelson Interest: A George III Cut Steel and Gold Presentation Snuff Box, in the manner of Matthew Boulton, circular with pull-off cover, inscribed to the interior This Box was made by a true Born Briton, John May Of Birmingham and Presented to the King Of The Ocean Horatio Vist. Nelson June 10th 1802. Whose daring deeds of Arms Rais'd England's Flag Triumphant O'er the World, the steel base highly polished forming a mirror, 7.8cm diameter Provenance: From a private family collection, almost certainly acquired prior to 1910, and thence by family descent . The box is unmarked. Cover fits well and closes securely. Areas of rust in many places and quite significant corrosion to the polished mirror base. No apparent significant damages or repairs. The engraved panel to the interior is slightly thin and gives when pressed. To the interior is a scrap of printed text describing the box in question, it starts "Last in this unique collection of boxes, is a circular one of cut steel, 3in. in diameter, the whole of the lid and sides in the workmanship formerly so much in vogue for sword hilts, knee and shoe buckles, and other ornaments....", and goes on to describe this box.
