A snuff box, Birmingham, circa 1750-1755 rectangular, the lid sketched in typical palette with a village view, the sides and base painted with butterflies and other insects, reeded gilt-metal mount and footrim width 7.5cm, 3in It is probable that the inspiration for the insect ornament was drawn from 'A Collection of Curious INSECTS' , forming pages 83 to 95 of The Ladies' Amusement, (1758-1762).
A snuff box, Birmingham, circa 1750 rectangular, painted with a peaceful harbour, the shallow waisted sides with flowers, metal mounts width 7.3cm, 3in Provenance Anonymous vendor, Sotheby's London, 12 July 1983, lot 31 Miss McLarty rigorously maintained the parameters of her collection: each enamel was either to be formed as an animal or must have a bird or insect or animal depicted upon it. According to her, this box only just qualified because of the lightly sketched flock of seagulls on the lid.
A snuff box, Birmingham, circa 1756-1760 transfer-printed in grey, the lid with La Partie Carree, the sides with the Birmingham reprints of the Children as Arts and Sciences, the base with a shepherdess chivvying a cow across a stream, the interior of the lid with musicians, reeded metal mounts width 8.5cm, 3.375;in The subject on the lid is taken from an engraving by Jean Moyreau of the painting of 1713 by Watteau.. The prints on the sides are reprints of the original Battersea factory (1753-1755) designs, softened by the addition of rose garlands. When the Battersea factory went bankrupt, many of their copper plates, designs and enamel blanks as well as finished articles, were sold off and dispersed among other centres of enamel production and transfer-printing. A transfer-printed snuff box, Battersea/Birmingham, circa 1755 rectangular, the lid with the arms of the Anti-Gallican Society, the interior with a profile of George II, in the Antique manner, engraved by Simon-Francois Ravenet, after the medal by John Sigismund Tanner, the sides and base with printed brown shell and diaper motif 8.5cm, 3.25;in Provenance Lord Ilford of Bury, sale, Sotheby's London, 9 June 1975, lot 39 The Anti-Gallican Society was instituted in 1745 in order 'to oppose the insiduous arts of the French Nation', that is, to discourage the importation and consumption of French produce and manufactures. Stephen Theodore Janssen, the owner and founder of the Battersea enamel factory at York House was one of the SocietyÕs Grand Presidents.. Dr Watney, ÔPetitions for Patents É.Õ, E.C.C. Transactions, 1966, cites this box among group A6 of the printed brown diaper and shell type of transfer-printed boxes with Birmingham and Battersea connections.
