An 18th century provincial carved and painted wooden Traverse Board, the circular upper section with an eight point compass star, over a lower board with incised Roman numerals one to fifteen, with further rows of drilled holes, 42cm highNOTE: The Traverse Board was a ship's watch aide memoire developed in the 17th century. The circular section was used to record the compass bearing on which the ship ran during in each half hour watch.
