WW2 medals, badges and ephemera, believed to have been awarded to 243607 Lieut. Donald Peter Bennett, found in named trunk and alongside flying trousers which are lot 1157 in this sale. Includes group of four 1939/1945 Star, Burma Star, Defence Medal and War Medal, Derby Borough Local Defence Volunteers card, badges including Notts and Derby, RAF, Royal Engineers, BGSCCF and RPA, Mk III. A compass impressed 1942, canvas pistol holder (1940), interesting chain mail armour, possibly WW1, ARP instructions, RAF SP armbands, ephemera for RAF Takoradi, Gold Coast, Africa including Christmas menus, Accra Brewery, football match, programmes etc
A LATE VICTORIAN WALKING CANE, the ivory pommel incorporating a compass (not working and probably a later addition), floral engraved silver collar by Loveridge & Co. Birmingham 1898 and with owner's initials FAR, malacca haft, metal ferrule, 85cm over all, together with a braided leather walking cane, 90.5cm long. (2)
Heinrich Bunting[Leipzig: (1581) c1590] Woodblock, two leaves combined, double strike, chips on edges with some loss to margins, some holes in margin the largest with a diameter of 7mm, small 1cm slit crosses right neatline, two foxing spots in bottom margin, tanning on outer margins, pencilled number and name in corner, compass points in margins: Septentrio etc., 21 in upper right corner; verso: German text, page 22 "Volgernun die Besrchreivung der heilige landes and p19 "Diere nach folhgende Taffel ..." from Bunting's Itinerarium Sacræ Scripturæ 25,6 by 33,1cm (two leaves: 30,7 by 37,2cm)
Ink and watercolour on laid paper with backing, paper watermarked with Strasburg Bend and Lily (shield with two diagonal bands surmounted by fleur-de-lis) and counter marked with “IV”, map edges unevenly trimmed, three vertical folds (assuming top of chart is North), modern repairs to ends of fold lines, small tears to edges, some damp marks, tanning and foxing, grey discolouration along half of one fold; verso: ink show through Recto and verso with ‘No 4’ in contemporary ink, one neat line on east side of map, scale in English leagues, rhumb lines, compass rose with fleur-de-lis indicating north, pin prick in center of compass rose, hydrographic detail includes soundings, shipping hazards and safe anchorages; land based detail include a few place names on the coast, a battery, fresh water sources, and profiles and descriptions of topography and terrain along coast approximately 47 by 57cm Refer to Lot 205 for additional background on the manuscript maps.
