Late 19th Century Brass Marching Compass by Elliott Brothers of London. A very good quality example, carried by Major Humphrey Howarth, of the 3rd Bn Devonshire Regiment. The brass body is stamped with the number 267, which is also found to the lid and the polished brown leather military pattern case. The compass rose with the details of Elliott Bros. Strand London. The leather case with ink details of “Howarth B33”. Near VGC. Major Humphrey Howarth was born in 1875 and was commissioned into the 3rd Devonshire Regiment in 1900 and in 1904 transferred to the 3rd Bn of the Notts & Derby Regiment. He served with the Battalion throughout the Great War.
