A bronze compass, oval in shape with pierced openwork geometric pattern to the top, underneath compass point with engraved pattern to the plate below; scrolling plant motif to the side; interlaced openwork floral projection to the top with suspension ring and plaited leather strap. 90 grams, compass: 55mm (2 1/4"). Property of a central London gallery; previously acquired from a private collection formed during the 1980s. Fair condition.

To our understanding from the vendor, Francis, Duke of Teck known as Count Francis von Hohenstein until 1863, was a member of the German nobility, and later of the British Royal Family by marriage. He was the father of Queen Mary, the wife of King George V, and therefore a great-grandfather of the present queen.
