A 19TH CENTURY BRASS SURVEYING DIAL, the silvered compass signed J Gargory, Fecit, 5 Bull St, Birm, well engraved compass points, the minor circle divided in four quadrants, the horizontal scale with vernier, arranged to adjust and rotate by enclosed rack and pinion gear, the edge-bar needle with jewelled cap and sliding lock on the underside of the compass box, the shaped base with folding fore and aft sights, level and tripod or staff mounting socket, the dial cover plate engraved with declination scale 30°-0-30° inscribed LINKS, the instrument showing some signs of original lacquer, contained in the original mahogany case, 10 3/4" (27.3cm) wide and with a mahogany tripod. A RARE EARLY 18TH CENTURY BRASS CIRCUMFERENTOR, signed T. Heath Fecit, with evidence of original lacquered finish to the underside, the silvered compass dial with finely engraved pointers to the North, South, East and West points, the inner circle divided in four quadrants, the outer 0° - 360°, the blued iron needle with gilt N and S points and brass cap, the compass box mounted on a shaped base plate with arms for twin sights and lugs with crescent wing nuts to secure the semi-circular arm supporting a surveying level with fixed focus telescope, the eye-piece with dust-slide, (object glass dust-slide missing), with bubble level, the frame cut for top and side viewing, with fore and aft fine levelling screws, the mount with crescent wing nut, the primary cut-away plate with scale divided 0° - 360° the 300° point drilled for use with a string plumet, with four detachable sights and staff mounting, 12" (30.5cm) diam; together with an additional sight. AN EARLY 20TH CENTURY POLISHED BRASS MINING DIAL, the silvered compass engraved in red; DAVIS & SON LTD, LONDON & DERBY 763, divided in four quadrants, the edge-bar needle with jewelled cap and stop, with level and cross-bubble, mounted with axis on a shaped base incorporating twin folding sights and inclination dial with bevelled glass cover, the compass base incorporating a silvered chamfered horizontal circle with vernier scale, the underside with screw-clamp, with dial cover-plate, the tripod mounting with ball-socket joint and tightening screw, contained in the original mahogany case, 11" (28cm) wide. A 19TH CENTURY POLISHED BRASS SURVEYING LEVEL, signed on the well-engraved silvered compass dial: Troughton & Simms LONDON, the 19 3/4" (50cm) long telescope with ray shade (a.f), rack and pinion focusing and bubble level, the compass divided in four quadrants, the edge-bar needle with jewelled cap, the compass-box raised on four tapering pillar supports from the shaped base-plate, with four-screw tripod mounting, in the original mahogany case, 25" (63.5cm) long. A LATE 19TH CENTURY ENGLISH SILVERED BRASS EQUINOCTIAL COMPASS SUNDIAL, unsigned, the compass with edge-bar needle, the horizontal plate engraved with the latitudes of London, Dublin, Bristol, Gibraltar and Malta, the folding latitude arc 0° - 75° with arrow pointer on a lacquered brass plate fitted to the hour crescent engraved VIII - XII - IIII, with spring-loaded gilt-lacquered folding gnomon, in mahogany case 4 1/4" (10.8cm) square, (compass glass missing).
A LATE 19TH CENTURY FRENCH PATTERN POLISHED-BRASS GRAPHOMETER, signed Stanley, Great Turnstile, Holborn, London on the rotating alidade with fixed sights and vernier scales, the semi-circular frame engraved 0° - 180 (x2) and the inset compass with silvered scale, the edge-bar needle with jewelled pivot-cap and clamp, the base with two additional sights and bubble level, with ball and socket tripod or staff mounting arranged so that the instrument may be used in the vertical and horizontal planes, in oak case with iron carrying handle, 11 3/4" wide. AN EARLY 19TH CENTURY LACQUERED BRASS SURVEYING LEVEL, signed on the silvered compass dial Gilkerson & Co., Tower Hill, LONDON, with finely engraved scrolling foliage decoration, the outer scale dividend 0° - 360°, the dial scale dividend in four quadrants, the iron edge-bar needle with jewelled cap and clamp, inset to the body limb with tripod mounting screw, the telescope with rack and pinion focusing, bubble level and located on the limb with two clamps, one arranged for vertical adjustment, contained in the original mahogany case, 20" wide, (tripod mounting accessory missing). A 19TH CENTURY POLISHED-BRASS THEODOLITE, (dismantled); signed on the horizontal plate Schmalcalder 399 Strand London, the telescope with rack and pinion focusing, bubble level mounted over the vertical half circle with Y supports and hinged clamps (one missing), raised on inverted V-frames incorporating tangent-screw fine adjustment, compass box and fore-aft bubble level, (cross bubble missing), the compass with plain iron needle with jewelled cap, the horizontal plate with twin silvered vernier scales to read against the chamfered silvered horizontal circle, with part base and tripod attachment (a lot). Early French, double-manual, 2 x 8ft, 1 x 4ft registers, buff to first 8ft, compass FF to f3, lute stop, Peau de Buffle, shove coupler, wooden jacks, real quill/leather plectra, keyboard having blackwood naturals and ivory-topped sharps. Finished in natural pine case with cedar lids.
Arnold Dolmetsch spinet /harpsichord (c1980s). A triangular spinet/harpsichord, 1 x 8ft register, buff, compass FF to f3, two sets of plastic jacks, one set in leather plectra, the second set in delrin plectra, keyboard having boxwood naturals and solid ebony sharps. Finished in figured walnut.
