Cary's began with the engraving and selling of maps from the early 1780s, having previously been apprenticed to William Palmer, and became a freeman in 1778.The first globes by Cary were advertised in the January 1791 edition of Traveller's Companion, which offered 3 1/2-inch, 9-inch, 12-inch and 21-inch diameter terrestrial and celestial globes. The address of the company at this time was 181, Strand, London, and the company was commonly known as J & W Cary, to recognise the contribution of John's brother William (1759-1825). It is from this address that the present pair of globes were produced. While John and William Cary had a joint enterprise for globes, the brothers operated as separate business entities when producing other maps or scientific instruments. A French silver 'Butterfield Dial' pocket sundial and compassMichael Butterfield, Paris circa 1700, discharge mark small article, signed 'Butterfield, Paris' Elongated octagonal shape, adjustable bird gnomon, engraved with various European cities and their latitude adjustment, scrolling foliate decoration, a compass attached, length 6cm, weight 0.8oz.Footnotes:Michael Butterfield (1635-1724) was a British clockmaker who worked in Paris in the late 17th and early 18th century. He was primarily known for producing sundials for use by Grand Tour travellers, enabling them to determine the time in the towns they visited. He opened a shop selling precision instruments in 1677 in rue Neuve-des-Fosses, in Saint Germain, where his sundial became fashionable. From this location he sold all types of sundials, dominating the market with his small travelling sundial featuring an adjustable bird gnonom and three chapter rings. This type of dial became the height of fashion and became known as the 'Butterfield Dial'. A Special Operations Executive compass,1940s, a World War II, M19/SOE-issued, concealed escape compass, comprising a small compass enclosed within the stub of a pencil, 4cm long Over two million compasses, in various iterations and concealed in various items, were issued to agents and operatives during the Second World War. These would have been concealed in seemingly ordinary objects which would not arouse suspicion if captured.
