Two pairs of late 17th/early 18th century carved oak door panels, each with central emblematic female figures, the larger pair with a figure holding a globe and compasses, the other with compass indistinctly carved with a name and the date 168...probably Urania, within fruit, leaf and berry surrounds, H 91cm, W 77cm, the two smaller panels with stylised leaf scroll and Green Man type masks, one figure with a caduceus, the staff of Hermes and the modern symbol for medicine, and the other figure with a key, H 91cm, W 58cm, (4)

dating: about 1620 provenance: Germany, Round, wooden body, flat at the base and convex at the top. Richly decorated with bone and brass inlays depicting floral and geometrical motifs on the surface, more elaborated on the front. On the front, in the centre, is a compass fitted with a lid and provided with a two-sided painted bone dial. The flask border is covered with brass bands finely engraved with floral motifs. Cow-horn fuse with spring closure. Two suspension rings. Very rare. dimensions 11.5 x 14.3 cm.

Eno's Fruit Salt was invented in 1852 by James Crossley Eno (1820-1915) who founded the company as Eno's "Fruit Salt" Works in 1868, which became an internationally recognised brand as one of the most successful cure-all mixtures, now owned by GlaxoSmithKline and sold as an antacid for indigestion.
