Silver cased half hunter pocket watch with enamelled Roman numerals, the dial with subsidiary seconds, inscribed Sir John Bennett Ltd, London (over wound) together with another silver mounted pocket watch holder with an open face pocket watch, inscribed Sir John Bennett Ltd, London and a small fob pocket compass
Very rare example of a late 19th century double sided pocket barometer & altimeter with a separate compass attached to the underside. The compass face is of Mother of Pearl. Probably retailed by the Army & Navy Co-operative Society stores at the turn of the century, it is made by Short & Mason who were their main suppliers for barometers.The silvered dial is engraved 'Compensated', " Short & Mason Ltd London" and has a barometric scale range from 23 to 31 inches, with a rotating altimeter scale range of zero to 8,000 feet.The compass has a Mother of Pearl face which pivots on a gemstone, with a manually operated transit lock.The body is attached to the underside of the barometer by a screw thread & can be remove for access to the barometer adjustment screw.Both cases are made of gilded brass, and in superb condition, with no denting or rubbing of the gilding.It comes with its original silk & velvet lined travel case in good cosmetic condition, which has two lids so both barometer & compass can be read in situ.(one catch missing and slightest scratch on side)It measures 50mm diameter by 25mm in depth when out of the case.
Zepplin L48 interest, a brooch made from the wreck of the L48. On the night of 16th June 1917, the L48 was one of four airships sent to attack London, After dropping bombs on Harwich, the airship tried to return home by heading east, however its compass had frozen at the high altitude and, unknown to its crew, it drifted north in the dark along the Suffolk coast, the airship was caught by searchlights but was too high an altitude for the planes to reach, in an effort to escape British airspace before dawn the Zeppelin captain gave orders to descend, Captain RHMS Saundby, from his aircraft, noticed the descent beginning and attacked again. His bullets hit the Zeppelin this time and the tail of the airship ignited, the ship crashed into the ground at HollyTree Farm in Therberton, near Leiston, Suffolk, three German crew managed to jump out of their gondola the other sixteen crew members died in the crash
* NEIL DALLAS BROWN (SCOTTISH 1938 - 2003), LOVERS AND SKY THREAT, 1967 oil on canvas, signed 127cm x 127cm Framed. Note: Neil Dallas Brown was born in Elgin, Moray and studied at Dundee College of Art, Patrick Allan Fraser School of Art in Arbroath and the Royal Academy Schools. He won a travelling scholarship to the continent and a number of notable awards and prizes. In 1967 he visited New York with a Scottish Arts Council bursary; in 1970 took part in the Arts Council of Northern Ireland Open winning a major prize; and in 1981 won a bursary to the Scottish Arts Council studio in Amsterdam. From 1968-78 he was visiting lecturer at Dundee's Duncan of Jordanstone College of Art, then joined Glasgow School of Art where he taught for some 20 years. He lived in Fife until his death in 2003. Dallas Brown participated in dozens of group shows but also had a series of prestigious solo shows, notably at Compass Gallery in Glasgow, a series in the late 1960s at Piccadilly Gallery in London, a touring retrospective in 1975 from Stirling University, Perth Art Gallery 1987, Thakeray Gallery London in 1989 and Glasgow School of Art 1998. Birds and humans featured in Dallas Brown's pictures, which are tinged with mystery, menace and surrealism. He said ''Painting is love. Painting is an affectionate devotion''. More than 50 of Neil Dallas Brown's paintings are held in major public collections in the UK including at Glasgow Museums & Galleries, Fife Council, Hospitalfield, The Glasgow School of Art, Edinburgh City Collection, Nottingham Art Gallery, The Walker Art Gallery (Liverpool), Aberdeen Museums & Galleries, Dundee Museums & Galleries, The Fleming Collection (London), Paisley Museums & Galleries and The Scottish National Gallery of Modern Art.
