Los 150

A WW2 military compass, webbing case, and nickel Elgin military pocket watch with heavy gauge sterling silver watch chain and T-bar. To include: a MKIII compass by T.G.& Co Ltd, dated 1940, with the serial number of 24070. The compass is complete with its original 1940 dated webbing pouch, which is ink stamped ‘MECo 1940’ along with a broad arrow mark. Plus, a military pocket watch by Elgin, with black dial and subsidiary dial at the 6 o’clock position. Marked with broad arrow to the back cover, and the serial number ‘T.K.5518’. Some sources suggest the T.K refers to the Tank Corps, but we have no concrete evidence that backs up this claim. The watch is fitted with an earlier heavy gauge sterling silver graduated Albert watch chain. Each link carries the lion sterling mark, and the T bar is hallmarked for Birmingham 1897, with the makers mark of E.Whitehouse & Son. The watch chain is 0.9cm at its widest point, and weighs 1.95 ozt / 60.5g. Condition: some faults. The compass has a little normal cosmetic service wear to the black painted brass, but this is nothing that detracts. There appears to have been a leak to the internal fluid, and the mother of pearl dial does not move freely. The webbing pouch for the compass is complete, and shows normal servcie wear / soiling. The pocket watch would not appear to run, even fully wound. There is browning to the underside of the glass front, but the case and watch watch is in good order. The silver Albert chain is in good condition, and can easily be removed from the watch if desired.

Albinus and his artist Jan Wandelaar used some ingenious methods to prepare the illustrations (...) with the aid of compass and ruler. In addition Wandelaar placed his skeletons and musclemen against lush ornamental backgrounds to give them the illusion of vitality, using contrasts of light and mass to produce a three-dimensional effect. The most famous plate in the atlas depicts a skeletal figure standing in front of an enormous grazing rhinoceros, sketched by Wandelaar from the first living specimen in Europe, which had arrived at the Amsterdam zoo in 1741."
