AN 18TH CENTURY NOCTURNAL constructed in fruitwood of typical form, inscribed Boath Bears by handle -- 9¾in. (25cm.) high; together with a liquid filled gimbal-mounted compass in box and a sighting tube (3)Condition report: Handle shows signs of old repair, rub marks, stains and abrasions commensurate with age. Good structural condition.

A FINE AND ORIGINAL LATE 18TH CENTURY THEODOLITE BY W. & S. JONES, HOLBORN, LONDON constructed in lacquered brass, the 13in. telescope with bubble level under, mounted to arc on A-frame over 3¼in. silvered compass, on rotating bedplate signed as per title and contained within original fitted mahogany box with drop-handles and later retail label for Stanley dated for 1923 -- box 10 x 13¾in. (25.5 x 35cm.); together with original wooden tripod of issue -- 53in. (134.5cm.) high (2)Condition report: Fine condition throughout.

AN 18TH CENTURY POCKET COMPASS SUNDIAL unsigned , with 2in. polychromed paper dial, blued steel needle, apparently original glass, brass chapter ring and folding gnomon, and threaded lid --2¼in. (5.5cm) overall; together with two 19thC pocket compasses, with jewelled pivots and one with arsenic green card (3)Condition report: First: glass cracked to one side, otherwise brass with typical signs of old wear and usage.

COMPASS SUNDIAL BY ELLIOTT BROS, STRAND, LONDON, CIRCA 1850 the chapter ring signed as per title with black-filled Roman numerals, mounted to bedplate with two bubble levels and folding latitude arm, contained within original box with plush-lined lid and priced 74/- with pasted monthly correction label -- 5 x 5in. (12.5 x 12.5cm.)Condition report: Good overall condition, remnants of polish.

(15cm.) square; together with a period set of instructions in poor condition and an associated brass eyepiece for a reflecting telescope, also signed by G. Singer-patent mother-of-pearl compass signed as per title and inset into folding wooden pocket case with levels, sights and inclinometer -- 3½in. (9cm.) square; together with a surveyor's cross scratched engraved with a menorah flanked S.L., contained in fitted box -- 3½in. (9cm.) (21.5 x 30.5cm.); together with a desk plate for Squadron Commander A.J. Villiers R.N.V.R.; and a British military issue hand-bearing compass (3)Footnote: Provenance : Alan Villiers collection. Tienxi Yi (Unity Under Heaven), within a twenty-four character inscription representing the points of the Chinese compass and four character roundels to the cavetto; the jar decorated in red, green and turquoise enamels with shaped panels of birds amongst flowers and rockwork, the shoulder with Buddhist lions and brocade motifs. An unusual famille rose Canton enamel sweetmeat set of five boxes and covers18th centuryThe box with four lobes at the compass points, attractively painted on top with nine scholars and an attendant playing weiqi and serving tea at the table on a pine terrace, the interior fitted with four semi-circular boxes and covers, each painted on the tops and sides with flower sprays, all within a pale turquoise and black meander border matching the main box. 23cm (9 1/4 inches) wide (10).
