An 18 inch terrestrial library globe on mahogany tripod stand Charles Smith and Son, London, early 19th century The sphere applied with twelve hand-coloured gores heavily annotated with states, cities, topographical features and voyages of discovery, the Pacific with analemma and trade cartouche SMITH`S TERRESTRIAL GLOBE, Containing the whole of, THE LATEST DISCOVERIES, AND, Geographical Improvements, also the TRACKS of, the most celebrated Circumnnavigators, LONDON, C. SMITH & SON, 172 STRAND pivoted via the poles within a brass meridian circle with hour ring, in a stand with horizon ring annotated with months of the year, signs of the zodiac and equation of time, the mahogany tripod stand with short turned upright issuing three down curved supports with spade feet and brass cup castors, (compass stretcher lacking, some wear and other damage), 104cm (3ft 5ins) high overall. Charles Smith and Son are recorded as working from 1799 to 1864, they were map publishers and engravers to the Prince of Wales.

An oxidized brass transit theodolite, signed `Baker, 244 High Holborn, London`, the telescope with rack and pinion focusing, lens cap and bubble level, the axis supporting a vertical circle with silvered scales, vernier and two magnifiers, supported on two A-frames, over the horizontal plate incorporating the signed compass box, silvered scale, twin verniers, tangent and clamping screws and two bubble levels, raised on a short tapering pillar with further tangent screw and circular stand, within original fitted box.

Moluccan Islands. Dudley (Sir Robert), Carta particolare del’Isole di Ladroes con I’lsole di Gilolo e de Molucchi, [1646 or later], uncoloured engraved sea chart, decorative cartouche and compass rose, 475 x 375mm. Dudley was the illegitimate son of the Earl of Leicester (one of Queen Elizabeth’s favourites). He eventually inherited the titles of the Duke of Northumberland and Earl of Warwick. Much travelled, he finally settled in Florence where his skills brought him the patronage of the Grand Dukes of Tuscanny, and it was in their service that he published the `Dell’ Arcano del Mare’. Although published in Italy, this was the first sea atlas by an Englishman. Engraved by Antonio Lucini the Dell’ Arcano was a monumental six volume work which took Dudley thirty years to complete.
