A VERY LARGE GILT BRONZE OF GUANGMU TIANWANG, THE GUARDIAN-KING VIRUPAKSHA, MING DYNASTYChina, 16th-17th century. Massively cast standing, clad in full armor decorated with beast heads and pendent sash, adorned with billowing scarves. His right hand is lowered in shuni mudra and the raised left is holding a stupa. The face with a wrathful expression marked by intense almond-shaped eyes below furrowed brows, a broad nose, and full lips. The hair arranged in a high chignon behind the tall crown with a small image of Buddha Amitabha. Provenance: From a private collection in Garnet Valley, Pennsylvania, USA.Condition: Good condition with old wear, dents, minor cracks and small nicks, some losses as seen on the images, light scratches, and a fine naturally grown patina overall. The lacquer gilding with scattered old touchups. They are reputed to be accompanied by large forces of supernatural warriors and placed at four corners of the Buddhist altar. Guardian figures continued to be of importance in Buddhism, and are found as sculptures or paintings in most Buddhist temples in China today.Virupaksha is the guardian of the West. He lives on the western part of Sumeru. A WWI brass compass by S. MORDAN & Co stamped with a broad arrow, 6054 1918, together with a Short & Mason Ltd makers London 'The Magnapole' brass compass. (2)Condition report: The magnapole has a lot of wear to the black lacquer with the brass showing through. The Mordan is worn but in generally good condition.

WW2 Royal Air Force / Special Operations Executive (S.O.E) Escape and Evasion Compass Concealed in Smoking Pipe, fine example of a standard looking smoking pipe which when you unscrew the mouth piece a small compass is revealed in the top. Remains in very good overall condition. During WW2 MI9 were tasked with making escape aids for downed RAF airmen and also for SOE agents to use when in occupied countries. Many of the items were smuggled into POW camps, these were mostly every day items like smoking pipes, shaving brushes, razor kits etc.
1918 Dated Prismatic Compass, blackened brass body which is engraved “W.O.GIBSON MELTON MOWBRAY”. Housed in its brown leather case which has 1918 date and Walsall makers details. Accompanied by a inert Mills grenade body with drill hole and fixed made base plug, semi excavated condition; 1916 dated trench whistle by J Hudson & Co, 1940 dated whistle and 1945 dated whistle; Princess Mary Gift Fund tin and some other pieces.
A carved bone-handled ebonised cane of nautical interest, the head carved as a curled scaly serpent holding a ball pommel in its mouth, the pommel incised with ships and sailors below the compass points, set on a tapering ebonised wood cane, possibly malacca, with brass collar and tip, 90cm long.
