He taught painting at Glasgow School of Art and Aberdeen College of Education, and lectured in art at Glasgow University and was the exchange tutor with the Chicago Institute of Art. Influenced by his love of flying and drawing on the landscapes of his native Firth of Clyde area, his manipulation of abstraction is much admired. He is widely collected and has had one man shows with the Compass Gallery in Glasgow, The Scottish Gallery in Edinburgh and The Charles Jahn Gallery in Chicago amongst others. Second World War - John May - Distinguished Flying Cross (1943), 1939-1945 Star, Africa Star North Africa 1942-43 bar, Air Crew Europe Star, Defence Medal and BWM attributed to Pilot Office John May (134655) R.A.F.V.R. extremely fine. John May’s DFC was announced in the London Gazette dated 30th March 1943 serving with 142 Sqn flying Wellington bombers. With original newspaper cutting about award of DFC: “The citation reads that he has consistently displayed fine navigational skill and eagerness to take part in operations against the enemy. These qualities have contributed to the success of his crew in obtaining photographs of the target area. At all times on the ground and in the air his fine example, skill and devotion to duty have been an inspiration to all other navigators of the squadron. P/O May was commissioned in 1942 and has taken part in many raids on Germany and the occupied territories. He is now on operations in North Africa.” With some copied research, he was commissioned on 23 Oct 1942 from rank of Sgt No 1101598.
