A WW1 era 1917 dated military compass, named to the reverse ‘W.Gosling VC’.Nickel construction and broad arrow marked by F.Darton & Co London.William Gosling (1892-1945) was a Battery Sergeant of the Royal Field Artillery. He won his Victoria Cross during the battle of Arras on April 5th 1917.He was presented with his decoration by King George V on July 21st 1917.Plus, a milled brass compass marked to the dial by T.Cooke London, likely early 20th century.Condition: the nickel VC winner compass is at fault; the internal glass and needle is missing, but could potentially be repaired.The compass is in otherwise good cosmetic condition.The brass T.Cooke compass has some wear to the exterior of the case, but seems to work as it should.Viewing is recommended.

Third Reich NSDAP Political Armband, being a red wool armband with central black swastika. No label to the interior. Some minor moth holes. Accompanied by a NSDAP Political Leaders tunic button, officers marching compass and some paper money. These items were brought home by Corporal Eric Albert Kerridge Cameronians (Scottish Rifles), he was stationed in Kiel and it is believed it was here that he picked up these items and the other war souvenirs which are listed in this auction. WW2 German Luftwaffe Aircraft Navigators Compass, fine example with the mounting base having the aluminium plaque ‘Funkpeilanzeigegerät’. Outer metal casing retains much of the original Luftwaffe grey paint finish. Large navigation dial with silhouette of aircraft. Remains in generally good condition.

An early 19th century Scottish silver mounted rams horn snuff mullunmarked, the lid with hinged thistle shaped and circular plaque engraved with Masonic set square and compass, the collar engraved 'Jas Andrew 1820'Length 9cm.Condition: The hinged lid does no completely close flush. Stable hairline crack running halfway round horn on the inside of the curl.

A Rare Armand Compass Dial With Ballooning Scene, French, Second Half 18th century,the dial signed Armand A PARIS, with glazed dome top housing a white enamel compass bearing eight points, and dial divided 6-12, 1-6, with gnomon and three supporting struts, mounted within a box with ornately decorated exterior, the interior with tortoiseshell inlay and ring, the underside of the lid with a gold-plated medallion finely engraved with a scene of a hot air balloon, 3in (7.5cm) diameter1in (2.5cm) high Footnotes:Jacques Etienne Armand was a skilled maker of sundials who was apprentice to Canivet in 1747. His career is recorded as spanning the years 1755-1780, but otherwise little is known of his life or the instruments he produced. The Montgolfier Brothers first balloon flights captured the public imagination in France and were depicted in contemporary prints, which coincided with Armand's career. The presence of the ballooning scene within the box may have been a method of appealing to this emerging market. His Theodolite design was used on numerous high precision surveys from 1784, and contributed to his election to the Royal Society in 1786. In addition to Theodolites, Ramsden built balances, barometers, sextants, and other precision instruments. The present 12-inch terrestrial globe was published before Cook's voyages in around 1766, and the coastline of New Holland (Australia) is inaccurate.
