A LACQUERED BRASS GRAPHOMETER BY PIERRE GOURDIN, PARIS, 1779, of typical form with arc signed and inscribed Gourdin au Paris, Quart Cercle, á Paris 1779, with 3½in. silvered compass with blued steel needle and foliate engraved supports -- 12in. (30.5cm.) diam, mounted on later wooden stand, Working between 1775 and 1800 Gourdin was twice rejected as an Ingénieur du Roi possibly because of professional protectionism from Charles-Joseph Meurand (see lot 220) who made very similar instruments. His luck partially changed in 1794 when he was chosen to value mathematical instruments seized during the Revolution.,
A LACQUERED BRASS GRAPHOMETER ANTOINE JOSEPH MEURAND, PARIS CIRCA 1780, of typical form, signed above the arc Meurand á Paris, foliate engraved sighting arm and support frame, 2¼in. silvered compass dial with blued steel needle and hinged socle support under -- 10in. (25.5cm.), Meurand was active between 1750 and 1805 from several address in Paris and specialised in graphometers, panotgraphs and sundials.
A FINE 'CAPTAIN KATER' PATTERN SIGHTING COMPASS BY THOMAS JONES, LONDON, CIRCA 1815, the 5in. mica card with arsenic green scale, signed in manuscript Thomas Jones No. 62 Charing Cross, steel needle, removable inclined lens assembly (later) and folding sight with lens -- 5¼in. (13.3cm.) wide, This pattern was invented by Captain Kater in 1811. A small inclined mirror and lens eyepiece assembly allows simultaneous viewing of the scale and the distant object via the opposite vertical folding sight. Kater's design pre-dates Schmalcalder's use of a prism but was not patented and became superseded by it., Literature: Scientific Instrument Society, Bulletin No. 127 (December 2015) p.36.

A box containing an assortment of various sundry items to include a cast iron figure of a whippet AFTER MENE, a jade carved panel depicting a crane in a landscape, a jade lidded box, a leaded dish with Japanese figures and central compass, etc CONDITION REPORTS Jade lidded box - break and repair to foot, various small cracks and splits especially to the carved foot and throughout, small chips and cracks throughout - please see images for further details. The plaque - some chips mainly to the edges, some light scratches, general wear and tear. Tray with compass - various scratches, nibbles, chips some knocks, dents etc throughout, split to the top where rim meets side, general wear and tear. Cavalry soap box - lid very tight, wear to base, some rust, loss of paint. Small treen box - lid missing one of the sides with splits and cracks to top, interior is missing one of the sides and one of the interior compartments missing, various splits, chips, nibbles etc throughout. Greyhound - is off its base, various wear and tear. Larger treen box - one hinge missing, one hinge badly damaged, various chips and losses throughout, general wear and tear. Cat tin - some wear and tear Fourteen plates - generally good, some light scratches, some brown stains, general wear and tear. All items with wear and tear.

Historically Interesting and Poignant WW2 Grouping of Gladys Pollaris, being an official printed certificate awarded to Gladys by the British Government for helping Sailors, Soldiers and Airmen escape or evade capture in occupied Europe. Accompanying the document is a 1930’s period small compass on chain which was said to have been given by Gladys to a RAF pilot who she helped escape and who returned the item to her after the war.
British Officers Equipment Belonging to Captain A B Falvey Royal Signals, the grouping consists of Captain Falvey’s 1944 dated combat boots with gaiter tops, short type brown leather boots, officers sam browne belt with cross strap and his Mark I marching compass. First pair of boots suffer with dry leather to the interior. (4 items) Captain Anthony Bernard Falvey, Royal Signals. Born in Dublin in 1919. He joined the Territorial Army (Middlesex Yeomanry) whilst still at school and was called up at the outbreak of war in 1939. He saw service in France, Libya, Tunisia, Palestine and Egypt. He served in the Royal Signals, part of the 7th Armoured Division (Desert Rats) and was commissioned as an officer just before the Battle of El Alamein. Subsequently he landed at Sicily, then on to Salerno and Naples. As a Captain, he landed at Normandy and his troop fought across France, Belgium, Holland and into Germany as far as the Danish border. He spent a year in Berlin after the war and worked with Retten Die Kinder to evacuate children away from the horrors of post-war Germany.
A 19th century maritime brass gimballed compass in wooden case, the dial inscribed 'Kelvin, Bottomley & Baird Ltd., Captain Chetwynd's Patent No.25965/06, Glasgow and London', the ring stamped 'Patt.24.0., No.144', and the outer gimballed ring inscribed 'Dent's Patent' with military markings, diameter of gimballed bracket 24cm, width of case 26cm, the case set with leather carrying strap.
