Ceilan quae incolis Tenarisin dictur, map of Ceylon (Sri Lanka), oriented with east at the top and includes elephants, gazelles and other animals, sailing ships, compass roses and 3 cartouches, engraving with hand-colouring, platemark 350 x 500 mm (13 3/4 x 19 3/4 in), sheet 455 x 540 mm (17 7/8 x 21 1/4 in), Latin text verso, even toning and surface dirt, some marginal nicks and small losses, unframed, [circa 1620].

Scilly Isles.- Collins (Capt. Greenville) The Islands of Scilly, sea chart with decorative cartouche in the upper left corner, compass rose and numerous rhumb lines, with the separately printed letterpress text mounted on to the lower margin (as published), engraving with hand-colouring, sheet 595 x 580 mm (23 1/2 x 22 1/2 in), sheet laid onto conservation tissue, numerous areas of careful restoration to loss in the upper left and other edges, faint folds and handling creases, minor browning and surface dirt, unframed, [circa 1700].

18th century compass by Cole, Fleet Street, London, silvered, in square mahogany case, c1780, 15cm and another. (2)Condition:COLE - Functions. Nice patinated condition with no issues apart from 1 hinge needs 2 new nails.The other unsigned - hand is off, paper label good. Original glass, case good but one catch missing.

Svanberg (Jons) Exposition des opérations faites en Lapponie, pour la détermination d'un arc du méridien..., 3 folding engraved plates at end, original wrappers, uncut and mostly unopened, spine a little frayed, Stockholm, J.P.Lindh, 1805 § Maissiat (Michel) Memoire sur quelques changements faits a la boussole et au rapporteur..., half-title, 8 folding engraved plates at end, light browning or soiling, original wrappers, uncut, faded, spine split, frayed at edges, Paris, L.G.Michaud, 1818, first editions, both rubbed, 8vo (2)⁂ Svanberg's measurement of the length of the degree of the meridian near the pole in Lapland was markedly shorter than that obtained by Maupertius, although the mid-point of the two degrees was not quite the same. A pencilled note inside the front wrapper states that 854 copies of the work were printed. The second item is a description of the construction and use of Maissiat's improved theodolite and other surveying instruments, with a short history of the mariner's compass. A copy in the Smithsonian is dated 1817 but is apparently otherwise identical.
