This piece is a celebration of Plymouth’s nautical history. The giant vintage compass rose on her back is inspired by the kind of compass rose drawn on maps from the 16th and 17th centuries, made modern by its bright colours. On the daylight side, Sir Francis Drake’s Golden Hind sails across the Atlantic in search of Spanish gold, while on the night side, the dreams of sailors show us mermaids and sea monsters under a starry sky.The ArtistAnne-Marie is a Suffolk-based artist, an ex-archaeologist and civil servant. Anne-Marie rediscovered her artistic roots when Pigs Gone Wild trail came to Ipswich in 2016. She has participated in several trails around the UK, painting lions, sun bears, hares, giraffes, bees, ducks and otters. She also painted a Van Gogh inspired car that went all the way to Monte Carlo in a charity rally. When not painting, Anne-Marie creates digital art and writes fiction.
