Note: Monotyping produces a unique print, or monotype, made by or on a smooth, non-absorbent surface. The surface, or , was historically a copper etching plate, but in contemporary work it can vary from zinc or glass to . The image is then transferred onto a sheet of by pressing the two together, usually using a . Monotypes can also be created by inking an entire surface and then, using or rags, removing ink to create a subtractive image, e.g. creating lights from a field of opaque colour. The inks used may be oil based or water based. With oil based inks, the paper may be dry, in which case the image has more contrast, or the paper may be damp, in which case the image has a 10 percent greater range of tones. Carlo Rossi created an exceptional body of work using the monotype process and was an enthusiastic exponent of the medium.

LACUÉE MARC ANTOINE: (1773-1807) French well remembered Colonel, killed in the battle of Eylau at the early age of 33. Nephew of Count of Cessac. A very interesting A.L.S., Col. Lacuée, two pages, 4to, Rochefort, 20th January 1804, to the Minister of war. Lacuée refers to the England desembarkment, reporting that 294 men of his regiment have embarked to Boulogne, mentioning that their only compass is the French and the regiment honour, and states `As I thought that the first battalion was the stronger considering their forces, I have entrusted to them the flag. I informed General Chabran who has approved such decision..´ Cervoni further refers to the rest of regiments going to embark in Boulogne and to General Soult in charge of the military manoeuvres. Dunkirk Interest. A Lilley & Reynolds Ltd brass binnacle with gimbal compass, 26cm high, removed from the Leigh Cockle Bawley sailing boat 'Endeavour,' that was used to evacuate troops from Dunkirk, May 1940. Together with a book, 'The Little Ships of Dunkirk,' which mentions the ship and owner (the vendor of the compass) Spike Thorrington.

A walnut and herringbone banded chest on chest, 18th Century, the arched and moulded cornice above three short and five long drawers, the bottom drawer inlaid with a compass medallion, 112cm wide/see illustration CONDITION REPORT: Condition is overall very good. Veneer segments to the cornice lifting in places, sides with scratches and other indentations. Drawer fronts with some repairs, scuffed at base.
