A Richard Cushee is also known to have worked at the same Chancery Lane address in the 1730's, and it is probable that he was the brother or cousin of Leonard. MASONIC INTEREST; a large mid-19th century painted and stained Masonic elbow chair, 'The Worshipful Master's chair', the shaped top rail above pierced and painted back splat, swept arms and square sectioned legs united by stretchers, sold with contemporary carpeted steps. The painting and embellishments from the apex to the seat are the sun, moon, the stars, the all seeing eye, the arms of United Grand Lodge, the level, the square and the compass, the volume of the sacred law, tessellated pavement, dual triangles with the circle and in the centre the letter G. On the panel above the seat are painted a pelican with wings outstretched feeding her brood within her nest. On the top and bottom rails of the chair are the words in ciphers which when decoded read 'Social No.85' and 'Consumatumest'. The unusual subjects of paintings discloses for the first time a curious and hitherto unrecorded state of affairs, that the name of Social Lodge No.85 was a lodge who worked with various degrees under craft warrants, height 210cm. Provenance: Farnworth Masonic Lodge, No.350.Additional InformationA very impressive and decorative item which is solid, obvious scratches to hand-painted back panel, losses and wear to arms legs and seat panel, joints are slightly open to the front, castors slightly sticking.
