A mixed lot, including a silver nail buffer, plated jester teething ring , a plated vesta, a Dalvey quartz traveller’s clock, three spring balances, a traveller’s compass and sundial, a seal , a book match holder, a Meerschaum pipe bowl and a pack of GPO meter postings labels. Condition generally good.
* NEIL DALLAS BROWN (SCOTTISH 1938 - 2003),LOVERS AND SKY THREAT, 1967 oil on canvas, signed 127cm x 127cm Framed. Note: Neil Dallas Brown was born in Elgin, Moray and studied at Dundee College of Art, Patrick Allan Fraser School of Art in Arbroath and the Royal Academy Schools. He won a travelling scholarship to the continent and a number of notable awards and prizes. In 1967 he visited New York with a Scottish Arts Council bursary; in 1970 took part in the Arts Council of Northern Ireland Open winning a major prize; and in 1981 won a bursary to the Scottish Arts Council studio in Amsterdam. From 1968-78 he was visiting lecturer at Dundee's Duncan of Jordanstone College of Art, then joined Glasgow School of Art where he taught for some 20 years. He lived in Fife until his death in 2003. Dallas Brown participated in dozens of group shows but also had a series of prestigious solo shows, notably at Compass Gallery in Glasgow, a series in the late 1960s at Piccadilly Gallery in London, a touring retrospective in 1975 from Stirling University, Perth Art Gallery 1987, Thakeray Gallery London in 1989 and Glasgow School of Art 1998. Birds and humans featured in Dallas Brown's pictures, which are tinged with mystery, menace and surrealism. He said ''Painting is love. Painting is an affectionate devotion''. More than 50 of Neil Dallas Brown's paintings are held in major public collections in the UK including at Glasgow Museums & Galleries, Fife Council, Hospitalfield, The Glasgow School of Art, Edinburgh City Collection, Nottingham Art Gallery, The Walker Art Gallery (Liverpool), Aberdeen Museums & Galleries, Dundee Museums & Galleries, The Fleming Collection (London), Paisley Museums & Galleries and The Scottish National Gallery of Modern Art.
Clavichord Probably Late 18th Century An unfretted clavichord, possibly German or Swedish, late 18th Century. The case later covered with scarlet and gilt-tooled leather, raised on painted and gilt decorated turned tapered fluted legs; Width 180cm, Depth 54cm. Joseph KirckmanLondon 1800A double manual harpsichord in a mahogany, chevron banded and boxwood strung case raised on a trestle stand with four square tapering legs; Length 254cm, Width 100cm. The keyboard surround with satinwood, crossbanding and ebony and boxwood stringing, the nameboard bearing the inscription Josephus Kirckman Londini Fecit 1800, 19 Broad Street, Soho. Ivory naturals and ebony accidentals. Compass FF to f3. Two Pedals, ivory handstops, including Venetian Swell, Harp Stop and Machine. The fascia bearing the inscription John Broadwood & Sons, Makers to his Majesty and the Princesses, Great Pulteney Street, Golden Square, London. The white label surrounded with decorative inlaid brass.
Thomas Tomkison London No 1329 c1821A grand piano the case veneered in rosewood inlaid with cut brass of a floral design raised on carved S-scroll legs with shell and foliate decoration; Length 245cm, Width 118cm, Depth of case 29cm, Height 68cm. The keyboard flanked by winged mythical beasts. The fascia bearing the inscription THOMAS TOMKISON, MAKER TO HIS MAJESTY. Stamped into the wrest plank T. Tomkison 1329. English Grand action. Compass 6 octaves CC to c4. This piano was made for George IV and located at Brighton Pavilion. Mathaus HeilmannMainz, Germany No 194 c1785A rare early grand pianoforte in a fielded panelled walnut case raised on four slender square tapered legs; Length 213cm, Width 95cm, Depth of case 24cm, Height 70cm. The sycamore nameboard bearing a large paper label with the inscription Mathaeus Heilmann Hof-Orgel und Instrumenten Macher in Mainz No 194. Compass 5 octaves FF to f3. Current pitch A=435. Two knee levers below the keyboard, which has ebony naturals and bone covered beech accidentals. Single bridge and with a Viennese action. Conrad Graf No 2505/6Austria, Vienna circa 1836A Classical Viennese grand piano in a cherrywood case raised on three turned, tapering baluster legs with lyre pedal supports; Length 242cm, Width 125cm, Depth of case 33cm, Height 70cm. The fascia bearing the inscription CONRAD GRAF Kaiserl: Kön: Hof - Fortepianomacher, WIEN, nachst der Carls-Kirche im Mondschein No 102. Divided bridge with a Viennese action. CC-EE bichord, FF-G4 trichord. Compass 6 ½ octaves CC - g4. Current pitch A=415. Ivory naturals and stained beech accidentals . Four pedals operating Keyboard Shift, Moderator, Semi-Moderator and Damper Lift. Complete with internal pine dust cover. Graf pianos were favoured and used by Beethoven, Chopin, Clara Schumann, among others. A late 19th century walnut and inlaid work box, the top with flag and compass decoration, inscribed 'A Gift 1881', enclosing a mirror to the lid and pull-out sectioned tray, length 35cm, width 25cm, height 13cm. CONDITION REPORT: Wear throughout condusive with age, some surface scratches and scuffs but nothing too serious.
STANLEY; a leather cased brass bodied circular pocket compass with paper dial, the cap inscribed 'Stanley Gt. Turnstile, Holborn, London', the reverse inscribed 'Joseph Holmes', diameter 7.5cm, and a further leather cased Verner's Pattern brass bodied pocket military issued WWI period pocket compass with mother of pearl outer dial and case inscribed 'S. Mordan & Co 65521 1917', diameter 5.5cm (2). CONDITION REPORT: The larger compass has a slightly uneven table, and both are not fully functional.The smaller compass, is, as catalgoued, a military issue, with relevant marks.
J. H. STEWARD LTD OF 406, STRAND, LONDON; a leather cased klinometer with silvered gauge, spirit level and square sectioned body, a bi-metal pocket compass inscribed 'Sold by C. Baker, 244 High Holborn', leather cased, and a tin cased set of Harling drawing instruments, all three probably military issued.

Mahoney, 3rd Battalion A Company, The Border Regiment including a malacca shafted walking cane with silver cap and presentation inscription, a pair of binoculars, leather cased Barker & Sons of London compass and two books, one containing a cease-fire document named to Sergeant Mahoney.
