ASSORTED HISTORICAL AND EXCAVATED ITEMS including an iron nail recovered from the Mary Rose; a gunflint from the Tower of London, both on oak bases with inscription plaques, three late Medieval brass letters from tomb memorials, a bronze purse-frame, 16th century; six George III bronze tokens dated 1797, three further coins and other items including a brass cased compass, a lead shell-form ampulla, and nine further items (14) The Mary Rose nail was raised by John Deane and William Edwards in 1840, then sold by auction in Portsmouth on 12th November 1840. Then purchased by Mr de Reuck in 1964 in Southampton. For a similar example to the purse frame in this lot see London Museum, 1954, fig. 52, no. 4.
Americana - a mid-20th century wooden ship's rivet or peg, from the Mayflower II, whittled and carved in the 17th century manner, naive octagonal head, 29.5cm long, c. 1955; a late 19th century mahogany compass, 15cm silvered register, hinged cover with hook-and-eye fastenings, 17 cm wide, c. 1900 (2) Provenance: Presented to the present vendor as a child holidaying in Brixham by a carpenter working on the new 'pilgrim' ship, which subsequently reenacted and sailed to America from Plymouth on April 20th 1957.
EARLY 20TH CENTURY GILT BRASS MINERS DIAL AND LEVEL by J. Davies & Son Ltd Derby, no. 4057 with silvered base, gimballed mount, removable wire, sights, black enamelled level, in fitted mahogany box with leather carrying strap. Together with an oxidised brass surveyors compass with folding sights by Short & Mason Ltd of London, together with another oxidised brass compass, probably military in fitted leather case with folding sight and eye piece. Miners dial measures 18cm diameter, second compass is 13cm diameter, third 11.5cm diameter approx. (3)(B.P. 24% incl. VAT) CONDITION REPORT: Miners dial is overall worn but appearing in near complete condition, the box very grubby and worn with age. Second compass has scratches and wear and tear commensurate with use and some discolouration to the silvering. Third compass in the military case has some staining, particularly to the North point and a bit of discolouring to the card.

A WWII period RAF G-Type flying helmet (size 2), .48225/58 with War Issue mark, three contemporary oxygen masks, all with War Issue mark, further detached pair of ear protectors and four ex-aircraft instruments comprising compass, RPM meter, rate of climb indicator and air speed indicator. CONDITION REPORT All variously worn, stained and discoloured, commensurate with use and age.

Teaches to guide any Ship or Vessle from one Harbour to another the Chief Instrument of which is the Mariners Compass,," of which a coloured sketch follows. As a m/ss., w.a.f. Most of the volume consists of case studies of navigational problems, copiously illustrated with diagrams. The remainder comprises details of a series of voyages - to Nantes, Bordeaux, Bilbao, Cadiz, Bermuda, Barbados, Charlestown..., some from Tuscar Rock.
