A late 19th Century brass binnacle compass on column on hexagonal base, with binnacle lamps by Kelvin Bottomley & Baird Ltd., of Glasgow and London, 20ins wide by 37.5ins high and a brass, enamel and painted bridge telegraph on column stand by France & Morgan, of Govan, Glasgow, 41ins high Note: By repute these two items came from the gunboat "Gwendolen". Built in 1897, the "Gwendolen" was shipped out to Fort Johnston (Mangochi) the year following for assembly. She patrolled Lake Malawi and was the largest ship to sail on the lake at that time. In August 1914 she put out of action the only German gunboat on the lake, the "Hermann von Wiessmann". She continued in Government service until 1940, when she was transferred to Nyasaland Railways, and was broken up in 1944.
