A Queen Anne Period Walnut Chest of Drawers, Circa 1705. The top inlaid with a compass star to the centre within shaped father-banding outlined with stringing, and having a moulded edge. The two short and three long drawers with brass drop handles, framed by beading and standing on bun feet. Measuring 34½ ins (88 cm) in height, 37 ins (94 cm) wide and 22 ins (56 cm) deep.
A patinated brass sundial B. Cole, mid 18th century The 6 inch square plate fitted with plain angled gnomen set at circa 50 degrees and centred with a foliate engraved and hatched eight point compass rose annotated N, NE, E, SE, S, SW and NW within herringbone bordered inner track, the middle track with quarter hour divisions, the outer track with Roman numeral chapters IIII-XII-VIII, signed B. Cole fecit between IIII and VIII and minute divisions to outer edge, the angles drilled for screw mounting. A Benjamin Cole is recorded in Baillie, G.H. Watchmakers & Clockmakers of the World as being Free of the Clockmakers Company in 1733.
A William III patinated brass sundial William C. Reed or Creed, circa 1700 The 12 inch octagonal plate fitted with substantial scroll pierced cast angled gnomen fitted via wedged tenons to underside and set at approximately 51 degrees, the dial centred with a thirty-two point compass rose within an inner chapter ring evenly divided into twenty four divisions with Roman numeral chapters I-XII-XI, the middle track engraved with the names of various European cities annotated with their local time in relation to their position on the dial within Roman numeral chapter ring engraved with numerals ranging IIII-XII-VIII, with cruciform half hour markers and signature WILLÕM C(.)REED between IIII and VIII, the outer edge with quarter hour and minute rings within outer track divided 0-90 for every quarter, the underside also engraved with an earlier simpler dial with outer Roman numeral chapter ring divided into halves and quarters and with inverted Knibb style stylised fleur-de-lys/trident half hour markers, the angles pierced for fixing, maximum width 33cm (13ins). Neither a William C. Reed or a William Creed appear to be recorded, however it is perhaps interesting to note a Robert Creed is recorded in Evans, Jeremy THOMAS TOMPION at the dial and Three Crowns as apprenticed to Tompion in 1689 and gaining his Freedom in 1699. The current lot with its pierced gnomen, cruciform half hour markers and herringbone engraving can be confidently dated to around 1700 on stylistic grounds and is clearly of high specification. The dial engraved to the underside is clearly earlier, perhaps dating from the 1680Õs, however is fairly basic in its design; this was probably the reason why the plate was re-used for a more complex instrument twenty or so years later.
Judaica – The Eighth Crusade – uncensored disclosures of a British Staff Officer. A classic of Nazi/Fascist anti-Semitic propaganda. This copy with the rare printed paper band to front cover: ‘...England is the victim of her own hypocrisy and her own duplicity; in trying to compass the downfall of others, Britain has merely succeeded in playing into the hands of the Jews...’ Also bearing an inscription from a German giving the copy as a gift dated Hamburg October 1939 and with a further inscription, possibly by the recipient ‘Rot – kept as a sample of what these extremists may do...’ [unfortunately for the world, they did].
