General Sir Richard Nugent O'Connor DSO signed Escape for Libya RAF Escaping Society cover. He fought in both War. He was the field commander for Operation Compass, in which his forces destroyed a much larger Italian army. In 1944 he commanded VIII Corps in the Battle of Normandy and later during Operation Market Garden. In 1945 he was General Officer in Command of the Eastern Command in India and then, in the closing days of British rule in the subcontinent, he headed Northern Command. He was also mentioned in dispatches nine times for actions in the First World War, once in Palestine in 1939 and three times in the Second World War. Good condition. A painted pine tool chest, containing a quantity of 19th century and later woodworking and carpenter's tools, including a No 113 Stanley, Rule & Level Co compass / circular plane, 25cm, moulding planes, chisels, saws, scribes, hand drill, and measures, with several named pieces, chest 91 by 45 by 38cm high. A Victorian Continental 18ct gold pocket watch, the white enamel dial with Arabic numerals surrounded by large black enamel chapter ring decorated with metal overlay depicting putti, swags and bells, glass lacking to front, engine turned decoration to reverse with Masonic compass and set square crest to cartouche, inscribed '1801 FB to JHBM 1858', stamped 'K18' to suspension ring, 5.5cm diameter, including two keys CONDITION REPORT: Lot 1 - no glass face, hands look to need replacing, small chip to black enamel chapter ring below suspension ring, very minor dent to back cover, looks to be in original box, 2 keys present, but mechanism untested, not in working order. Gross weight over 120g (too heavy for our scales)
A ships wheel desk top combined clock barometer thermometer compass and hygrometer set, cased. Width 19 cm. CONDITION REPORT: The clock does wind and adjust but is not currently ticking. Three of the eight wheel handles are missing. We can see no maker's name. The compass needle is detached from the centre pin. The thermometer appears to be working as does the barometer. We are not sure about the hygrometer which is currently reading 75%. There is some discolouration and tarnishing to the original finish on the metalwork. The item is not specifically marked to anybody however the box has the initials "ANRK".
