A SAPPHIRE AND DIAMOND 'PYXIS' NECKLACE, BY MARGHERITA BURGENERThe cable-link chain suspending three graduated star motifs pavé-set with brilliant-cut diamonds, alternating with three circular-cut sapphires and a brilliant-cut diamonds within collet-setting, the clasp suspending a further similarly-set diamond, mounted in 18K gold, with maker's mark 'MB' for Margherita Burgener, with maker's case painted by Chicco Margaroli, lengths 42 & 45.4cm"The inspiration for this new line of jewellery was born out of the desire to design something unique inspired by the beauty of the stars and constellations" - says Emanuela Burgener the hands behind the jewellery brand Margherita Burgener - "the very first constellation I took inspiration from was Pyxis." Discovered in the mid-18th century, Pyxis is a faintly visible constellation in the southern sky:"It's not a big constellation" - Burgener explains - "It only has three brightest stars." It was not the size of the constellation that caught Burgener's eye but rather the meaning behind its name that tugged at the designer's creative mind. In both Greek and Latin, the word 'Pyxis' means compass, specifically a mariner's compass - a vital tool used by ancient navigators while sailing the oceans. This resonated with Burgener and inspired her to explore this poignant concept:"In this time of great difficulty, I wanted to reflect on our need for guidance in our journeys, a bright star to point us in the right direction". Interestingly, 'Pyxis' is also a word for a small casket holding something precious. In this knowledge, Burgener paid particular attention to the creation of the box that hold the necklace, crafting a beautifully harmonious pairing from start to finish. To paint the one-of-a-kind box, Burgener commissioned the Italian artist Chicco Margaroli to design the box only available with the Pyxis necklace. Margaroli's an Italian artist whose career spans from trompe l'ôil trough 3D installations to organic art, her deep fascination with nature enabled her to seamlessly weave her style into Burgener's brief. The necklace encompasses the delicate yet powerful beauty of the Pyxis constellation - a dainty 18K white gold chain connects three diamond-studded star-charms. Three, representing the number of brightest stars in the Pyxis constellation. Small deep blue sapphires are interspersed between the star-charms nodding to the darkness that surrounds Pyxis in space, but also symbolizing the darkness surrounding our journeys towards light. The box features cool tones of silver and blue on a dark grey background. The left and central portion of the box presents a stylized version of the Pyxis constellation, three bright stars emerging from a sea of smaller ones while a compass rose towers in the bottom right corner, a symbol to always keep on the right path.Condition Report: 30 diamonds 0.73ct total, 3 sapphires 0.30ct totalMinor signs of wear, overall in good condition

A Louis XIV or Louis XV Silver Butterfield-Dial, Signed 'Butterfield a Paris', Further Marked with French Mark, Almost Certainly Either the Décharge For Étienne Ridereau, Paris, 1684-1687 or the Ouvrages non Chargés Mark for Étienne de Bouges, Charles Yvon, Armand Pillavoine and Charles Cordier, Paris, 1717-1722, elongated octagonal and with folding bird gnomon with adjusts for latitude between 40° and 60°, the front engraved with four chapter rings and with recessed compass, the back engraved with the names of twenty eight European cities and their latitude, with fitted shagreen covered and green velvet lined case with silver button, with later manuscript note, 5.4cm wide by 4.5cm deep Provenance: Captain Edward Arthur Aylmer, D.S.C. (1892-1974), and by descent. The later manuscript note fitted into the cover of the fitted case records this Butterfield dial as: 'A Curious little Sun-dial -- foreign -- intended (as it seems) for the Latitude of 40° to where the bird's beak points -- but could be set to other Latitudes'. While entirely correct that the 'curious' object is foreign the Butterfield who gave his name to this series of objects, including those made by other instrument makers working contemporaneously or later, was Michael Butterfield (1635-1724) who was a British instrument maker who moved to Paris in the 1660s. He seems to have worked for the French Royal court and was appointed engineer to King Louis XIV. He opened a shop in rue Neuve-des-Fosses where fashionable Parisians and others would furnish themselves with scientific instruments such as the present dial. For a further discussion of the Butterfield dial see M. Cowham, 'The Butterfield Dial', Bulletin of the Scientific Instrument Society, No. 133, 2017, pp. 25-28. Though this is a smaller example than other there are a number of similar examples known, including one in the collection of the Victoria and Albert Museum (CIRC.415-1923), catalogued as dating to 1680-1699. It is very similarly engraved to the present, though with a somewhat less elaborately engraved compass and the names of differing cities. It seems to be marked with the same mark as the present example which suggests that the present example also dates to the last years of the 17th century.. Marked on back with French fleur-de-lys mark. There is some minor surface scratching to the silver, though the case has protected the dial from any significant damage. The case has some staining and loss to the shagreen. The lining is somewhat worn.
