The leather case is embossed with the makers mark for ‘Martins Birmingham’ and also dated 1916. There is also a lightly hand embossed name in the leather of the case, but this is difficult to read, but appears to be ‘A G Fuire’. Condition: very good. Cosmetically very good for its age and use, with much of the blackened brass finish remaining. Intact glass, and a good quality intact mother of pearl dial. Some very minor paint loss to the black painted central part of the dial. Very good colour and patina to the leather from use and handling. Working retention strap and buckle.
A rare wartime signed 1939 issued pocket book once belonging to Great Escapee, Flight Lieutenant Paul Gordon Royle (1914-2015) of No.53 Squadron Royal Air Force. Paul was number 55 in the line of prisoners waiting to leave the Stalag Luft III prisoner of war camp. The pocket book is the 1937 edition, made with a blue canvas cover that has a button down flap on the reverse side. The book covers all manner of service related matters, such as flag recognition, ranks within the armed forces, the powers of commanding officers, court martial procedures, rations, knot tying, discipline during flights, world currencies, and many more pieces of information useful for a young Pilot Officer. The book is signed in fountain pen ‘P.G.Royle 16.5.39’ to the first page, with this date being a mere 3 days after he was formally inducted into the RAF, using the service number 42152. Provenance: the pocket book was acquired some years ago during the house clearance of former England cricketer, and WW2 Flight Lieutenant, Reg Simpson RAF (1920-2013). The link between Simpson and Royle is unknown, but both being Flight Lieutenants could have meant that they knew each other at some point during the war years. An RAF officer’s cap is also included in the lot, which is very faintly marked Flt Lt Reg Simpson to the lining, Interestingly, the cap has another name written to the underside of the leather sweatband, which reads as ‘D.J.Smith’, and it is fitted with a Queen’s crown badge to front (post 1952). The vendor disposed of many of Reg’s WW2 possessions many years ago, with the cap being the only remaining item. The signature is known to match the example seen in Paul’s original 1939 dated flight log book, and later post war examples (photographs of these items may be seen in the image pack, but these are for comparison only, and are not included in the sale - the photograph of Flt Lt Royle can be found in the public domain, and is not included in the sale). Notes: Paul Gordon Royle was born in Perth, Western Australia on January 17th 1914. Reg was recruited by visiting RAF personnel in late 1938, and was selected for a short service commission. Now 25 years old, he embarked for Great Britain in February 1939. His first stop was the No.7 Elementary and Reserve Flying Training School at Desford in Leicestershire, where he embarked on his first dual flight on March 14th 1939, and a solo flight on March 29th. Paul continued his training, and after the declaration of war on September 3rd 1939 his flight experience and training were accelerated, resulting in him emerging from his course as one of the most experienced pilots. Paul was posted to No.53 Squadron on May 14th 1940, and was very quickly involved in a reconnaissance mission over France, which after being attacked by German fighter aircraft, was forced to land his Blenheim Mk IVin a field at Fontaine-au-Pire. Seeking medical attention for himself and fellow flight crew, they made their way to a nearby village, followed some 6 hours later by the German forces who took them into captivity. Paul endured a year in Stalag Luft I, before being transferred to the famous Stalag Luft III in Sagan, Germany. He acted as one of the so called ‘penguins’ who disposed of the ground dug sand from tunnels, by letting it out of the bottom of their trousers. By March 24th 1944, and with an escape tunnel complete, he was number 55 in the queue of prisoners waiting to leave. He teamed up with his fellow officer, and number 54 in queue, Flt Lt Edgar Humphries (accounts vary as to which exact numbers both men were). Armed with civilian style clothes, rations, and a compass, they made their way of of the tunnel and on to the snow covered ground at 2:30am on March 25th 1944. Paul and Edgar were recaptured by the German Auxiliary Police when they entered a village, a mere 24 hours after their escape. The reprisals were severe, with Edgar Humphries being one of the 50 escapees executed by the Gestapo, believed to be a direct order from Adolf Hitler. Flt Lt Royle was interrogated and put into solitary confinement, with his life being spared. He was finally liberated on May 2nd 1945, and flown back to the U.K. where his was discharged from the RAF. Paul died aged 101 in 2015 in Perth, Western Australia, the last but one veteran of the Great Escape. Condition: the book has some normal age and service related wear. Some of the pages has a little age soiling, but nothing that is detrimental to the item. Page 124 is nibbled at the corner, and there is some rust corrosion to the press stud closure. The included officers hat has soiling to the liner, and there are 2 small holes to the crown area.

An Early 19th Century French Combined Carriage Timepiece, Barometer, Thermometer and Compass, with enamel dials to front, the timepiece with Roman numerals to the eight day movement with silvered dial to compass, contained in polished brass and bevelled glass Corniche pattern case with turned handle and on bracket feet, 6.75ins highThe clock presents in good overall condition showing some adhesive marks to the rear, which in our opinion it has had some sticky tape present at some point and it should clean off quite easily. The compass to the top appears to function correctly as does the thermometer and barometer, however we cannot warrant any form of accuracy, it should be noted that there is some slight marking to the glass at the point of adjustment for the barometer and that one hand appears loose. The clock itself appears to have the correct movement although we cannot warrant this. The clock winds, runs and sets but should be regarded as untested. There is no further damage to the glasses or to the enamel dials. Overall an honest example. We strongly recommend that any prospective bidder studies all images closely prior to bidding. The compass measures 40mm in diameter, the barometer measures 82mm x 54mm, and the clock measures the same, the thermometer measures 82mm x 17mm. Overall size 165mm x 76mm x 125mm.
