John Bird, London, a fine 18th century bronze sundial: the 41.5cm. circular engraved scale with outer ring of Roman numerals, before/after the sun ring, calendar ring and compass points, with bronze gnomon, signed John Bird, London, bears Coat of Arms for the Buller family, green verdigris patination overall. * Provenance: Kingsnympton Park, Devon. * Notes: John Bird [1709-1776] worked in London for Jonathan Sisson but by 1745 had his own business in the Strand and was advised by the eminent clock maker George Graham. Bird was commissioned to make a brass quadrant 8 feet across for the Royal Observatory at Greenwich where it remains to this day .He also supplied the astronomer James Bradley with further instruments of such quality that the commissioners of longitude paid him the huge sum of £500 on condition that he take on a 7-year apprentice and produce in writing on oath a full account of his working methods. This was the origin of his two treatises 'The Method of Dividing Instruments [1767]' and 'The Method of Constructing Mural Quadrants [1768]'.

Superb Great War Ensemble of an Officer of the Duke of Wellingtons West Riding Regiment, consisting of four pocket cuff rank tunic of a Captain, brass regimental tunic buttons to the front and pockets. Bronze officers collar badges with bronze T’s underneath. Officers khaki breeches with ties to the lower legs. Officers brown leather lace up boots. Sam Browne belt with double straps, Webley pistol holster, brown painted officers torch, ammunition pouch, compass in case and officers 1916 dated binoculars. Uniform also accompanied by a fine Officers type “Gor Blimey” peaked cap with bronze regimental cap badge to the front. Original brown leather chinstrap and cloth strap holding up the neck flap section. Interior of the cap has fine lining with leather sweatband. Grouping is mounted for display on a museum mannequin which is included with the lot. A fine instant display of a Great War British officer. Set has not been removed by C&T Auctioneers from the mannequin and inspected the interiors of the tunic or breeches.

COMMEMORATIVE MEDALS, WORLD MEDALS, Italy, St Peter, Oval Cast Bronze Plaquette, 17th / 18th Century, the hooded and shrouded but bare-footed Saint stands near rocky altar holding bible and keys, 96.5mm x 70mm. Cast on a thin flan, possibly once silvered, very fine. Four little ‘nicks’ at the compass points, suggest that the plaquette was made for attachment to a clock, casket or furnishings.

The round top inlaid with a compass star to the centre and irregular stone specimens of a black ground around the border, resting on a 19th century ebonised base having a wrythen reeded baluster column above shaped silhouette cut legs terminating on small bun feet, 25½ ins (65 cms) high, 23 ins (58.5 cms) in diameter.
