A WW1 Verniers style Compass in brass, with original leather case. In need of some restoration. Brass body with viewing window to the lid (glass cracked). Broad arrow marked to the base. Inner glass missing, which allows the metal dial to be removed. The dial is scratch marked to the underside ‘tested 18.9.15’. Complete with original fitted leather case. Condition: noted above. Could be restored or used for parts. The leather case is mostly intact, but the retaining strap has split away.
A WW1 British officers marching compass, by Negretti & Zambra. Brass body with black painted finish, viewing window to the lid and suspension ring. Mother of pearl dial with luminescent arrow, and brass stop button to the side. Broad arrow and maker marked to the bottom. Complete with its original leather case and strap, named to ‘M Blakeway Royal Tank Corps’. Officially embossed maker mark and date of ‘T.F.&S 1916’. Notes: consigned by the original owners granddaughter. Malcolm Blakeway entered the war on August 10th 1915, and originally served as a 2nd Lt in the 1st battalion Yorks & Lancs Regiment. He later attained his Captaincy while serving in the Tank Corps. He is entitled to the 1915 star, BWM, and Victory medal. He was a native of Handsworth, Birmingham, and later of Chaddesley Kidderminster. It’s believed that he also held a commission during WW2, again as a Captain in the Royal Armoured Corps. He relinquished this commission on August 16th 1945, and was granted the honorary rank of Major. Condition: generally very good. Normal service wear to both the compass and its case. There appears to be a zig-zag pattern lightly scratched into the lid of the compass, likely from the WW1 era (perhaps a moment of boredom?). The compass appears to work as it should, with the stop button also functional. The leather case has a good colour and patina. It may have had a different original owner during WW1, as there is another name inked out on the case.
A selection of WW1 related items. To include: a trench art British tank, complete with machine gun turrets to the top and sides. Engraved to the top ‘World War 1914-19’ with ‘France’ and ‘Cambrai’ engraved to the sides. Also, a Verner’s Pattern marching compass, with brass body dated 1915 (missing glass to lid). A Turkish POW beadwork snake (head present but detached). 5 WW1 period cap badges, including the RAF, Army Ordnance Corps, Royal Army Service Corps, East Lancashire Regiment, and the Kings Liverpool Regiment. And, a silver and enamel sweetheart brooch for the Royal Army Ordnance Corps. 8 items. Condition: normal age and service related wear. The compass appears to work as it should, but is missing the glass from the lid cover. The beadwork snake has its head detached, but a repair may be possible. The trench are tank has a little crimping to the metal, and some surface toning, but nothing that detracts. The badges remain in good condition.
A MODERN TABLE GLOBE, probably dating from early this century due to country names, countries delineated by different natural patterns, fully rotating on a metal stand with a compass is set into the base, approximate height 30cm (1) (Condition report: appears in generally good condition, no obvious damage)
