A 'Faithful Freddy' submarine binnacle, Admiralty pattern no. 189-N, serial no. 11435 K., with a 3.5in. (9cm.) diam. spirit damped compass, the card marked with fleur de lys pointing north above a Royal crown, the outer brass ring stamped Patt.188A, no.1276 K, mounted on a lockable gimbal in a brass and mahogany binnacle, fitted with a single window cowling and peep hole cowling to opposite, the column fitted with an adjustable light shutter from a lamp in the base and burner to upper side, electric intake tubes to side of main body, the whole on a brass locking foot ring, 18½in. (47cm.) high.* Introduced in 1909 as a portable binnacle for use in the conning tower, as an aid to navigation when running on the surface. The instrument became known as Faithful Freddy to generations of submariners.** Condition: The peephole glass missing, hinge broken, the upper burner light glass broken, no compensating balls or brackets, otherwise good condition.

A MID 19TH CENTURY METAMORPHIC WALKING STICK, horn mounted cover fitted with a compass over a two drawer telescope with shagreen cover which unscrews from the malacca shaft, with brass collar inscribed 'Patent' and plaited woven collar, metal ferrule, length approximately 87.5cm, (Condition: horn cover split and thread worn, compass looks to have been glued in place and the glass is cracked, the shagreen cover is loose, the drawers of the telescope are stiff but do function, the glass lenses are not in working order, the shaft of the stick is pierced with brass inset cord hole)

An ivory desk thermometer, mid to late 19th century, the top with gadrooned and beaded step rims above a pentagonal column housing a thermometer graded from freezing to fever heat, all on a raised circular base. Height 10.7 cm. (The now vacant top section would have housed either a compass or small sundial.)
A George III pocket compass, by Robert Bancks, the plated body with enamel dial inscribed "Bancks, No. 440 Strand, London", housed in a red Morocco leather case with green velvet interior.
