1st-2nd century AD. A bronze steelyard weight comprising a length of trichinopoly chain with hook finial, and a hollow-formed bust of Cupid with small lateral wings to the shoulders, styled hair, wreath to the neck, small nose and pellet eyes. Cf. Simpson, G. Roman Weapons, Tools, Bronze Equipment and Brooches from Neuss-Novesiaum Excavations 1955-1972, BAR International Series 862, Oxford, 2000 plate 48 for type. 79 grams, 21cm overall (8 1/4"). Property of a British gentleman; formerly in the private collection of Russian businessman Yuri Golubev (1942-2007), some of his collection was published in his book 'Symbols and Images'; acquired on the London art market 1990s-2007. [No Reserve] Fine condition.
10th-11th century AD. A mixed group of iron tools comprising: two barbed eel-spears, one with a tine absent; a pothook with guilloche shank; a five-tined flesh hook. 543 grams, 18-22cm (7-8 1/2"). From the family collection of a London gentleman; formed in the late 1940s-1950s; thence by descent. [4, No Reserve] Fine condition.
Late Period, 664-332 BC. A pale blue glazed composition shabti with tripartite wig, false beard, arms crossed holding agricultural tools, seed bag to the shoulder, dorsal pillar and square base, bands of hieroglyphic text to the lower body; supplied with a custom-made stand. 75 grams, 13cm (5"). Acquired on the London art market prior to 1980. Very fine condition.
