Late 19th century French mantle clock, 8-day movement by Japy Freres, striking on a single bell, ormolu case, cast in the form of a harvest boy with sheaves of corn, scythe and other field working tools amongst baskets of fruit and flowers, height 45cm (17"). [FINE 18TH CENTURY BINDING] THE BOOK OF COMMON PRAYERLondon, Millar Ritchie for J Good, 1794. Thick 8vo, engraved plates, occasional spotting. Bound in a fine contemporary straight-grained red morocco binding, boards with 4 outer gilt rolls and lines including flowers and swags, central gilt devices to centre of both boards with various gilt tools representing the crucifixion, cherub heads above and below the letters IHS, set within a gilt flaming oval, spine fully gilt, some minor wear to lower board and extremities, spine rubbed with hairline vertical cracking but sound. The style of this unsigned binding is heavily influenced by the work of a number of German immigrant bookbinders who moved to England in the late 18th century

(Qty: 5 cartons)This photographic equipment was all the working property of the legendary adventurer, photographer and mariner Alan Villiers, and is consigned to auction by his family.Born in Melbourne, Australia, Villiers first went to sea at age 15 and sailed on board traditionally rigged vessels, including the full-rigged ship Joseph Conrad. He commanded square-rigged ships for films, including Moby Dick and Billy Budd. He also commanded the Mayflower II in 1957 on its voyage from the United Kingdom to the United States.He wrote 44 books, and served as the Chairman (1960-1970) andPresident (1970-74) of the Society for Nautical Research, a Trustee of the National Maritime Museum, and Governor of the Cutty Sark Preservation Society. He was awarded the British Distinguished Service Cross as a Commander in the Royal Naval Reserve during the Second World War. Villiers also trained as a pilot, 1937-38, and sailed with Arab dhows in the Persian Gulf, 1938-39.He settled in England and when he died on 3 March 1982 at Oxford he was survived by his wife and three children.
