According to the directions of William Preece, Richard Turberville and Roger Edwards Gentlemen Commissioners..., 1781, pen and wash plan on vellum edged in silk, large ornate strapwork cartouche and mileage scale, the scale decorated with the tools of a surveyor, table of reference and compass rose, slight dust soiling, 545 x 575 mm, manuscript title of the enclosure repeated on verso in a contemporary hand (1)

Rembrandt, Sa Vie, Son Oeuvre et Son Temps..., by Emile Michel, Paris: Librarie Hachette, 1893, half-title, portrait frontispiece, numerous plates and illustrations, marbled free endpapers, top edges gilt, remainder rough-trimmed, contemporary olive green crushed morocco by Johanna Birkenruth, with her ink stamp to preliminary blank, faded (especially to spine and upper cover), a trifle rubbed in places, raised bands, gilt panelled compartments with tulip tools, gilt lettered direct in second and fourth compartments, date lettered at foot, covers with gilt double fillet border, and inner double fillet panel with tulip cornerpieces, enclosing repeated double 'r' monogram between small sunburst tool, red morocco doublures with gilt border of hound's tooth roll and fleur-de-lys roll, and inner border of scrolling seedhead roll between triple fillets, enclosing a triangular panel filled with tulip sprays and dots and roundels, terminating in a palmette tool, large 4to Johanna Birkenruth was an early and eminent member of the Guild of Women Binders. She produced jewelled bindings which possibly inspired Sangorski and Sutcliffe to follow suit. She offered classes in bookbinding in South Kensington, and some of her bindings were exhibited in Chicago in 1893. (1)

Norton for Robert Pawlett, 1680, additional engraved title, engraved frontispiece bearing the royal arms of Charles II, occasional marks, first and last few leaves with dampstaining to head and foremargin, frontispiece and title each with short closed tear and small loss to foremargin, I12 with closed tear, U6 with small excision to foremargin, affecting a few letters on verso, front flyleaf (defective) with early ink ownership names of Ann Butler and 'Martha Eyre Her Book 1729' to verso, all edges gilt, contemporary elaborately gilt-decorated red morocco, incorporating coloured infills to design, some wear to extremities, spine with raised bands, tools include drawer handle, four-petalled flower, and tulip, gilt roll on edges, 12mo, unrelated autograph letter signed from the bookbinder Sidney Cockerell loosely inserted Provenance: From the library of Howard M. Nixon. The tools used are typical of the period, similar tools being used by the Queen's Binders and others. (1)
