A FINE RADIO-CONTROLLED STEAM-POWERED 1:8 SCALE MODEL OF THE WINDERMERE LAUNCH BAT (1891) MODELLED BY KEITH TOWNSEND, 1987, constructed as in working practice with framed carvel hull, planked and varnished decks fitted as appropriate, awning, hinged glazed engine compartment containing .3/8in. stroke compound marine engine with mahogany-lagged copper boiler driving a single-shaft 3-blade brass propeller, hidden servo and battery compartments, maker's/owner's plate to back of cockpit numbered '16', loosely mounted on brass and marble display base with brass banner legend signed in facsimile, within brass-mounted glass cover with end handles. Overall measurements -- 17 x 47½ x 15in. (43 x 120.5 x 38cm.); builder's certificate; historic data; instructions; tools and spare parts, (A lot), Bat became famous when, in 1904, she was successfully used in the first experiments by Isaac Story and Jack Kitchen to steer a craft via remote radio control. A 19th century Continental porcelain etui, the embossed white body decorated with floral sprays, with gilt metal mounts, the hinged lid opening to reveal a fitted interior of gilt metal tools, comprising bobbin, spoon, knife, folding knife, scissors, etc. height 4ins Condition report: Some scratches to glaze, some rubbing to glaze in area, tiny areas of discolouration, one implement is missing, mounts are tarnished in places, scissor blades are corroded, pen nib is squashed and possibly missing a section, pen knife blade is slightly corroded, one implement with spooned end is bent.
