Large Gibeon MeteoriteA large chemical group IVA meteorite from the Gibeon fall, showing unusually an unusually fine example of surface ablation. 6 kg, 22 cm. (8 1/4"). Ex Douglas Rose collection; ex David Baker (with ticket). The term Gibeon encompasses the whole meteoritic material fallen from the sky during this fall. The fragments of the meteorite in the strewn field are dispersed over an elliptical area 275 km long and 100 km wide. The meteorite was discovered by the Nama people and used by them to make tools and weapons.Very fine condition.Starting Price: £400
Gibeon, Namibia Meteorite Sawn HalfA sawn half of a Gibeon meteorite, showing good Widmanstatten lines and characteristic ablated surface. 134 grams, 60 mm. (2 1/4"). Ex Douglas Rose collection. Gibeon is a meteorite that fell in prehistoric times in Namibia and was named after the nearest town. The meteorite was discovered by the Nama people and used by them to make tools and weapons; in 1836 the English captain J. E. Alexander collected samples in the vicinity of the Great Fish River and sent them to London. John Herschel analysed them and confirmed for the first time the extraterrestrial nature of the material.[No Reserve]Very fine condition.Starting Price: £5
Gibeon, Namibia MeteoriteA nickel-iron octahedrite IVA meteorite from the Gibeon fall, sawn to reveal the internal Widmanstatten patterns and with a characteristic outer surface. 47 grams, 51 mm. (2 1/4"). Ex Douglas Rose collection. Gibeon is a meteorite that fell in prehistoric times in Namibia. It was named after the nearest town: Gibeon, Namibia. The meteorite was discovered by the Nama people and used by them to make tools and weapons. The fragments of the meteorite in the strewn field are dispersed over an elliptical area 275 km long and 100 km wide.Gibeon meteorites are composed of an iron-nickel alloy containing significant amounts of cobalt and phosphorus. The crystal structure of this meteorite provides a classic example of fine octahedrite and the Widmanstatten pattern is appreciated for its beauty both by collectors and designers of jewelry.[No Reserve]Very good condition. Strong Widmanstatten patterns.Starting Price: £5
Gibeon, Namibia Meteorite SliceA slice of the Gibeon iron octahedrite meteorite, chemical type IVA, showing fine Widmenstaten patterns. 243 grams, 14 cm. (5 1/2"). Ex Douglas Rose collection. The Gibeon meteorite broke up high in the atmosphere and scattered fragments over many square kilometers. The local people used fragments of this high-alloy nickle iron for tools for centuries.Very fine condition.Starting Price: £100
Gibeon Meteorite SphereA sphere cut from a fragment of the Gibeon meteorite showing an excellent Widmanstatten pattern; classed as a chemical group IVA iron meteorite. 835 grams, 59 cm. (2 1/2"). From the Douglas Rose collection; ex David Baker collection. For centuries fragments of the Gibeon meteorite, which broke up high in the atmosphere, were used by the local Nama people to make tools. In 1836 the English captain J. E. Alexander collected samples of the meteorite in the vicinity of the Great Fish River and sent them to London; there John Herschel analyzed them and confirmed for the first time the extraterrestrial nature of the material. The high nickel content (about 8%) makes it very chemically stable.Very fine condition.Starting Price: £200
