A set of Charles II-style steel and silver fire tools, 19th century, comprising tongs, a poker and a shovel, each with foliate mounts, shovel 90.5cm long (3)Provenance: Maurice 'Dick' Turpin, Barons Keep, London W14.Literature: R Edwards & P Macquoid, 'The Dictionary of English Furniture', rev. ed. 1954, vol. II, p.67, fig. 43.The present examples are based on the 17th-century set now in the Queen's Bedchamber at Ham House. Others are known to have been made for and supplied by Lenygon and Company of Burlington Street, London, who were a notable firm of decorators. For similar examples, see Sotheby's, 'Property from the Collections of Lily & Edmond J Safra', 3 November 2005, lot 512, and Christie's, 'Interiors - Masters & Makers', 25 June 2013, lot 233.Condition ReportAll with geneeral knocks and wear commensurate with age and use. Some tarnish and discolouration. Minor pitting. The poker slightly misshapen, with a split to the band of one of the foliate mounts, which is itself a little misshapen.
