Maritime Engineering - a pair of brass keel level gauges, by James Howden & Co Limited, Glasgow, silvered registers, turned ebonised handles, 15.5cm long, late 19th/early 20th century James Howden (1832-1913) was a Scottish-born engineer who began work on his own account in 1854 specialising in machine tools, later concentrating also on the design and supply of marine steam engines and boilers being awarded a number of patents. The firm still exists.
