This was completed by 1728. The cabinet maker Charles Douglas was employed as House Carpenter from at least 1732 until 1749 and there he is known to have made what may be the earliest firmly provenanced mahogany chairs in Scotland, at a time when the architect William Adam was re-ordering some of the rooms. Whether Douglas made the present fine side chairs is not certain, since Lord Tweeddale sent him to London on at least one occasion to purchase tools and patterns (see Furniture History, 1983, pp. 13 and 60). The Sitting Room at Yester House showing one of the chairs photographed by Bedford Lemere in 1905 (copyright RCAHMS). One chair with old worm holes in the back rail, an ear replaced on one of the front legs, the back rail of the other chair covered over with velvet and unexamined, this chair lacking one ear from one of the front legs, unexamined beneath the cover
