Hairdressing.- Stewart (James) Plocacosmos: or The Whole Art of Hair Dressing..., first edition, lacking half-title, with engraved frontispiece printed in sanguine and 10 engraved plates, light foxing or browning, contemporary half morocco, g.e., slightly rubbed, rebacked preserving old spine (faded), corners repaired, 8vo, for the Author, 1782.⁂ Scarce work on all aspects of hair and hairdressing including growth & care and the effects of diet & lifestyle, tools, false hair, head dresses and cosmetics; the plates depict the extravagant hairstyles of the time. Switzer, woodcut portrait of Parkinson, one full-page garden design, one small orchard plan, one small woodcut of tools and methods of grafting, and 109 full-page woodcuts illustrating about 780 varieties of plants, woodcut initials and head-pieces, title fore-margin neatly restored, 12 early ff. with corner repairs, wormhole at lower corner of 15 following ff., a few other corners very neatly repaired and restored, occasional short tears or light soiling to margin, a few early annotations (including one referring to the potatoes of Virginia), contemporary calf, rebacked, rubbed [Henrey 282; Hunt 215; Nissen BBI 1489; STC 19300], folio, H. ‡ A CASED 14 BORE FRENCH D.B PIN-FIRE BALL AND SHOTGUN BY DEVISME, 36 BOULEVART DES ITALIENS, À PARIS, NO 1541, DATED 1858 with rebrowned twist sighted barrels signed on the rib, rotary underlever action chiselled with strapwork designs involving monsters and a demon mask in low relief on a matted ground, the action tang and locks decorated en suite, the latter signed, figured walnut half-stock, chequered grip, fore-end numbered on the inside, iron mounts decorated en suite, comprising trigger-guard and butt-plate: in original fitted brass-bound mahogany case lined in blue baize, the lid impressed with the maker's signature in gilt letters on the inside, complete with accessories including turned boxwood ammunition tools, turns screw and bullet mould 71.8 cm; 28 ¼ in barrels Provenance Christie's, 19th March 1980, lot 95 F. P. Devisme is recorded at this address circa 1850. He was awarded silver medals at the Paris Industrial Exhibitions of 1839 and 1841.
