A group of mother of pearl sewing tools, comprising; a cylinder form tape measure with overhanging top, ink marked silk tape commencing at 3 inches, 3cm max diameter, a pair of matching reel holders, two matching reel tops, one with stem, and a mother of pearl stiletto with floral carved top, 8cm. Egyptian Glazed Composition `Smen Ta Wa` ShabtiLate Period, 664-332 BC. A light green, superbly-modelled shabti with tripartite wig and plaited beard, crossed hands holding tools, dorsal pillar and square base; bands of elaborate funerary hieroglyphic text on the lower body, in part reading: `Smen Ta Wa priest of the food temple of Ptah and superior of the Pharaoh`s food`. 234 grams, 19cm (7 1/2"). Private French collection, Paris art market, 1980s. A shabti of this superb quality can only have been made for a person of very high status. Ptah is the ultimate creator god, considered the demiurge, the artisan-like figure responsible for the fashioning and maintenance of the physical universe, who existed before all things, and by his wilfulness, imagined the world into existence. Very fine condition, unusually fine modelling and hieroglyphic text.

An olive-green shabti with finely modelled facial features, tripartite wig, agricultural tools gripped in the hands, seed-bag to the left shoulder; the lower body with horizontal bands of hieroglyphic text extending to the dorsal pillar. 172 grams, 14cm (5 1/2"). Property of a Dutch collector; formerly in the collection of the well-known German Egyptologist, Bolko Stern. Fine condition, some 19th century restoration.

Property of a London collector, acquired early 1990s. [2, No Reserve]Fair condition; one repaired, one slightly abraded.

(Light offsetting from frontispiece onto the title.) Contemporary blue/grey morocco, covers panelled in gilt, spine divided into two unequal compartments by a raised band, lettered in gilt in the uppermost, the lower with a design of daisies and foliage built up from small tools, gilt turn-ins, t.e.g. (light scuffing to extremities, slight discolouration of the spine). Provenance: Cecilia Codrington (inscription dated May 1923, possibly noting the gift of the book, as a wedding present, from Lady Victoria Machell); The Library Collection of the Late W. Leslie Weller MBE, DL, FSA.
