Clemens Pasch (1910 - 1985)Girl in a cloak, bronze with greenish brown patina on a stone base, height with base ca. 74 cm, signedLiterature: Wvz. Gertz/Günther 73The Düsseldorf sculptor Clemens Pasch mainly created elongated figures of statuesque posture, often standing in casual poses. In later works, curves of the body such as thighs and hips of the female body are strongly emphasized. A number of his works can be found as large sculptures in public spaces. The artist is not concerned with the depiction of individual figures and models, but with the body as a sculptural form in its relationship to its spatial environment. The sitting ''Girl in a Coat'' sets a counterpoint to this, so to speak. Her body is completely enveloped by a hooded cloak, which in its aesthetic quality marks the boundary between the function of the image and the pure, rounded materiality of the raw bronze, while the hands resting in the lap and the face are naturalistically formed. The materiality, the traces left by tools, the roughness of the surface as well as the raw natural stone base are placed in a tense relationship to the gracefully rendered uncloaked parts girl's body.

März 1977 - Mai 1977, Leonard Hutton Galleries, New York (verso Ausstellungsetikett)Literatur: Ausst.-Kat. David Burliuk (1882 Semyrotivka near Kharkiv - 1967 New York)Storm in Spring, oil on canvas, 94.5 cm x 69 cm, with a copy of a confirmation of authenticity by the artist's son stating that the work was painted in Moscow in 1910/11, with craquelure, losses of pigment, small holes in the canvas, partially restoredProvenance: Private collection, HanoverExhibitions: ''Der Blaue Reiter und sein Kreis'', 18th March 1977 - May 1977, Leonard Hutton Galleries, New York (with exhibition label on the reverse)Literature: Exhib. cat. "Der Blaue Reiter und sein Kreis", Leonhard Hutton Galleries, New York, 1977, cat. no. 4 (with colour illus.).Burliuk was born in Russia on 21st July 1882, and was one of the defining artists of the Russian avant garde. After studying from 1898 to 1902 at the art academies in Kazan and Odessa, he went to the Munich Art Academy in 1902. Initially associated with the Futurist movement, or Cubo-Futurism as it was known in Russia, he joined the artists of the Blaue Reiter in Munich, for whose famous 1912 almanac he wrote an article on ''The Wilds of Russia.'' In 1907 he returned to his homeland and participated in numerous exhibitions. Landscape painting was part of his repertoire from the beginning. In 1922 he settled permanently in the USA. Although his paintings continued to be exhibited in the Soviet Union, the government did not allow him to re-enter Russia until 1956. This early Expressionist landscape painting attests to David Burliuk's close association with the art of the Blaue Reiter. According to a confirmation of authenticity by his son Nicholas Burliuk, it was created in around 1910/11, shortly after the artist's return to Russia from Munich, and shows a forest path in the surroundings of Moscow. Its main feature is a pictorial invention based on color contrasts, as practised at the same time in Munich by Marianne von Werefkin and Alexej Jawlensky, for example. Based upon the initial impression provided by nature, the picture is built up from colour compositions in red, yellow and green, lavishly applied with a brush and other tools to develop both a structural effect and colour contrasts, behind which the character of the image recedes.
